I thought that - but after a little bit of reading is seems that the human body looses its some of its immune system ability at that age. (70ish) You may be fit and healthy but the system that works well fighting off infections whilst young doesn't over 70. Im sure that the medics on here will correct me if Ive misunderstood the process.

Well OK Ron, maybe that’s right but not well explained at all by government. Also, when I look around, there are loads of 50s and 60s folks who are obviously a lot frailer than I am.

As long as someone gets me my supplies of wine and scotch as well as the baked beans I’ll be OK :D

I’ve been sent a video clip of Chinese people eating all sorts Of stuff in a market - it’s so obvious to me how the virus has crossed the species!

Both my wife and I are 71 although fortunately are in good health ! unfortunately my mum in law is 94 and currently in a council run respite care home - as she is deemed to be a self funder we are dreading the call that says they are sending her home soon with a care package ie care workers going in 3 or 4 times a day - as anyone who has similar circumstances with ageing parents knows you cannot get by with just carers coming in for half an hour 3 times a day - if we are required to self isolate we cannot go and help with things like cleaning , laundry etc let alone the psychological anguish of being alone ? I see no alternative other than for my wife and I to continue to go and help and accept the risks involved.

As regards ourselves we are lucky to live in a quiet village with a garden big enough to enjoy self isolation for the summer - our holiday to Greece in June clearly won't happen but that pales in to insignificance to what may other people with suffer particularly those on zero hours contracts , self employed etc - they won't be thinking about holidays but just how they will survive with no income.
 
This self isolation thing for the over 70s is very vague in it's definition.

According to discussion on BBC this morning it's OK to go out for essentials provided you don't have any symptoms. At least that was my take on the discussion. Boris is going on TV later and will probably cast a whole different slant on it, I'm learning to just do what needs to be done with sensible precautions.
 
We tried to get a Tesco home delivery yesterday!
We went through the dates until March 29th and no slots available - I don’t know how we will get our groceries if we are under for months house arrest?

Family or good neighbours Ron, we are helping a few old codgers around us with shopping :thumbsup:
 
Ive got one neighbour who will collect my prescriptions and another who will collect essentials but that's about it!
Its poor but this is the society we live in now I'm afraid.
We currently have a well stocked freezer and shelves so we will survive by doing another internet / Tesco shop three days before this the current order arrives so we get back to our normal seven day cycle.

Still can't get bog roll tho' :thumbsdown:
 
Italy announces that if your taken ill with the virus anyone over 80 will be left to die, they wont be given an intensive care bed. :cry: Bloody hell they are in a mess over there.
 
Its worth finding out your local online community groups if you have them and joining up. Self help groups are already springing up local to me to help the community by distributing leaflets offereing help with the essentials,

We’ve just set up a village delivery scheme that will take care of groceries and prescriptions for the over 70’s in your situation Ronk, I’ve got a van so I’m doing grocery shops. I’m sure there will be similar schemes in your area in due course. :thumbsup:

This is why I don't understand the UK's approach to the virus. They had a chance to get ahead of it but instead have waited and now run the risk of being in a similar state. I hope for all of you that it doesn't get as bad as here.

Although the vast majority of the dead are elderly (Italy has more than enough of them), there are plenty of reports coming in of people who were in otherwise good health having died. Unless people take responsibility and do their bit in limiting the rate of infection this will only get worse as hospitals are further stretched and the threshold for treatment inevitably gets lower.

I've spent the last week at home only going out once to the supermarket and it seems a large percentage are doing the same. Exactly, why the hell our "Government" has left things so late makes no sense. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't like to be in their shoes making life or death decisions, but for gods sake they should have seen this coming with what your going through over there. They have ordered the manufacture of patient ventilators knowing that our NHS supply was dire! and have have asked JCB and RR to produce what we need, they are not going to be available anytime soon :!:

Spoke to an ex-colleague who still tech authors for Boeing down in Welwyn Garden City.
He tells me all the young graduates are bragging that they have placed very small home delivery orders, with several stores, for every week for the next 6 months. Just to be sure they get a slot!
Then they add to it at the last minute, or cancel if they don't need it!
FFS! These are mostly mid-20s people! If they think that is the way that society should run...............for their benefit alone.......the f**kers should be made to do community service, delivering to the old folks.
Bloody good job I moved on or I'd be up for assault (and it would probably be classed as racism too!)
I feel the need to self-isolate from these tossers for about the next 20 years!!!
