Vanos Filter Changed Today !!!!

Changed my Vanos filter at 72,000km. Old filter was absolutely clean, but fitted the new one anyway, as I decided it wasn't worth trying to return it for a refund.

did my vanos filter today , all went as per web guide, one query tho, mine had a little white nylon washer behind the small o ring but i have never seen mention of this by anyone else on here or on the web guide. just curious :?

ok, just looked at a photo on here and it shows the same split nylon washer, so all ok,... except for the small nagging voice in my head , saying .. did i put the seal in front of or behind the washer...! mmmm ,...i'm going to have to go and check are'nt i ! doh !!! :headbang: oh the joys of owning an m

It looks like a nylon washer but starts life as a grey O Ring, when compressed it turns into a washer type thing, technical explanation !! :)

That goes on first then the traditional black O Ring 2nd

sorry darren but i dont buy the technical explanation you offered, are you talking about the larger of the two o rings? in the op pictures it clearly shows a white nylon split washer adjacent to the left of the small o ring. I'll wager that it started life exactly the same as it is now and has'nt somehow metamorphasized from rubber to nylon ! just curious why 1, no one has spotted or mentioned it before and 2, why it is not supplied as a 4 piece kit instead of 3. :?

Mmmm, I have had another look and it was just my assumption that the grey O Ring metamorphasized into the washer under compression as that's all I got with my kit, maybe BMW changed the nylon washer to an O Ring, mine has been fine since the change and I believe Andybikes has recently changed his too, sorry for any confusion

mmm strange, looks like they all have them, so there for a reason, dont know what though, but you'd think for a couple of pence it would be supplied with the 2 o rings and filter. :?

The filter isn't a maintenance item (from my experience at Inspection 2, my filter was totally clean), so there isn't a maintenance replacement kit.

The filter itself (part 11361401971) has the two separate 'O' rings (parts 11311318659 and 11361403325) associated with it, but if you damage the nylon split washer that is a support backer for one of the 'O' rings, then the whole valve body (part 11367838080) has to be replaced. Here is the complete part set diagram: http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BT93&mospid=49345&btnr=11_2993&hg=11&fg=15&hl=6

Will ring my Indy - autotechnics - and see what they say about this filter , find out when it needs changing .

That filter looks exactly the same a the on on the vvti of my MR2, they are after all doing the same job. There also nothing in the Toyota service schedules for replacing the filter, so it seems a bit more common for it to be ignored over different manufacturers. People have reported eml and codes for vvti malfunction that when checked find the filters a bit grubby, replacement has cured them. Although those of us who have used engine flush and good f/s oils have found them spotlessly clean at 100K miles, we've just replaced them as a precaution and they cost something like £5, it's fiddly to get to on our cars so you can imagine it's not worth putting an old one back in if you're going to the trouble of taking it out

With there being quite a few ///M's joining the forum I thought I'd bump this thread back up, the Vanos filter isn't a service item so worth doing if you've not done it already

If it's not a service item then does it really need changed? I've read about the various vanos issues so I guess it's a no brainier to change this cheap filter :)

Seems forum advice has created a supply and demand price increase on the filter! £30+ now on ebay, will try dealers tomorrow.

£30!!! That's disgraceful if so, it's literally tiny and probably costs about 10p to manufacture. Worth doing though, if you replace the O-rings your better off using Beisan/Hack Engineering one's rather than the not so good BMW one's now.

Where do Beisan / Hack o rings some from. Do you have a link?
Thanks.
Filter £8 from dealers and o rings about £15!

As Tony says why have a filter and not have it on maintenance schedule?
Your oil pickup in the sump also has a gauze filter. Do you change that too on a maintenance schedule?

I'm not saying that you shouldn't change this filter, but such filters are kept in place as a safety measure. That if something goes wrong with the engine, it doesnt clog up certain parts, in this case probably the (very expensive) vanos solenoid block.
If -for example- a piece of liquid gasket would break off in the engine (after the oil filter), this filter prevents it getting in that solenoid block.
That's why it's there.

Also this is a metal gauze filter. If it's ok after inspection, you don't have to buy a new one.
