Vacuum in fuel tank

Hi

I recently got a 2007 2.5si Automatic, and from the first morning it struggled to start. I took it back to the dealer and it turned out the breather system was blocked so the tank had sucked inwards, and burned out a fuel pump. They replaced the whole tank.

But I still find that the fuel cap is sucked on tight. When I get it to about 1/4 full and want to fill up, I have to jiggle it back and forth and bit by bit I hear air wooshing in and then I can get it open, after about a minute. To me that is not normal and I suspect there is something wrong still.

I've searched and found posts on this but they offered various causes which were beyond my understanding, so I am asking here for some simple places to start looking.

Does anyone know what else could cause this besides the fuel tank? I believe they replaced the tank and the pumps and sensors inside the tank.

Cheers
Ryan

Is the breather valve separate from the tank? So if they changed the tank is the value far enough away from it that they could have missed it do you think?

I have found references to the EVAP system, is that something special?

I am going to have to learn a lot here it seems!

Depends on how much they replaced - if just the tank then I wouldn't think it was replaced as it's part of the fuel injection system (see here). Do you have the invoice for the work done? Or could you check with the dealer?

Have you checked for any error codes?

Luckily here in Australia a car from a dealer has a government mandated 3 month warranty :)

My code reader is with a friend, but I think I am just going to take it back on Monday and stand over them while they look at the codes.

I do know they had no codes showing after they replaced the tank though, so this may be a more subtle problem.

Thanks for the link to the fuel system, that is just what I needed to try learn about this.
