Updating my Pro Nav, help required

Tried to register with BMW ConnectedDrive online because I want to update my map on the Sat Nav as it's never been done and is way out of date. After creating an on-line account I had to fill a form in and send it to them with a copy of my V5c. They claim not to find my account and I discover they used the wrong email. They now say I have to go to a dealer?

In the past I've downloaded maps from other sources and installed them with no issue. Is this a possibility with BMW?

All help appreciated 😀

Steve.

I suggest that you ring them on 0800 3256 000 and try to sort out the mix up. If the customer service person is unhelpful then ask to speak to a supervisor and sort it out. Once you have a ConnectedDrive account it's easy to sign up for map updates (usually 2 each year) on to a USB flash drive and install. From memory, a £60 subscription covers you for 2 years.

I rang the number on my paperwork for BMW Connected Drive Tel: 0800 5610555 and they have added my car to my account. This can take upto two days to show in my account (strange?) and then I can purchase the map update(s) etc. Once it is showing I will try the other number above if there is a price difference etc. Thanks,

Steve.

I’ve got connected drive with map updates now only until the end Aug 2019

The download into BMW Download Manager (mandatory) takes hours on my 16mbps connection. A 32Gb usb was formatted Fat 32 and the 24Gb of files transferred onto it.

The stick was put into the glove box socket but the system could no see it. The Guru at the Dealers also tried.

I hope you have more success than me - I would appreciated it if you could let me know how it goes with your updates please

Current maps are 2019 - 2

Ps - Talk of 3rd party maps on the Forum ist Verboten!

Hi, I may have a solution for you and not for one minute are there any gurus at a dealership in my opinion. Agreed they may be a bit more knowledgable than most people as they mainly work with the same brand. Occasionally you may find someone with proper knowledge but generally in my opinion they just follow instructions as you would. An independant specialist will probably be more knowledgable. I am going off on a tangent now but a colleague of mine took his car to a dealership for an instrument panel issue and was told it was impossible to do/change and was factory set. He brought it to me and with my diagnostics kit for that particular brand, I sorted it and I've never owned the make of his vehhicle he has, just saying......(knowledge is power)

Right, here goes.

I am fairly new to BMW and I have a lot of technical knowledge with respect to electronics etc. I put a USB stick with a lot of music in the glovebox USB port and the system did not recognise it? My USB drive has a flashing light that flashes when data is being read or written and stops when the system has finshed doing whatever it was doing. I left it for 5 miinutes or more until the light stopped flashing and then the system recognised it and allowed me to transfer the contents to the internal HDD (Jukebox) of my system. What I am thinking is that the map data is approx 23gb ish i believe and that the system reads all the data first before it acknowledges that there is a drive plugged in that it knows it can deal with, and this is going to take some time.

Try the USB drive again and wait 5 or 10 minutes to be sure, take a drive somewhere because if your system is like mine it turns itself off after 5 minutes or more when the engine is not running. Probably thinks its been left on and is saving battery power? Took me a while to copy my music onto the HDD and had to keep starting the car so it didn't switch off. The system appears slow at reading large amounts of data. Less than 2gb was absolutely fine.

I am still waiting for my car to appear in my ConnectedDrive account so I can purchase the new map 2019-2 I believe?
I have read somewhere the system requires some sort of generated code? I believe this may be done automatically if the map is downoaded for the car listed in ConnectedDrive?

Steve.

The activation code was supplied but it was never asked for - to be honest I didn’t wait for five minutes - perhaps I was just being too hasty?

Not to worry as the dealer has installed the 2019 -2 maps for me on the Z - I do have to update the system on the the 335 so I will probably cough up the fee but be more patient at install time

Use a USB device with an LED on it that flashes when data is being read/written, this way you can see when the system has read and acknowledged there is a device plugged in.

I am still waiting for my car to be added to my account.

Just a word about the connected drive subscription- Don’t be tempted to get the concierge service !
It was excellent and staffed by good people who sounded like they wanted to help - now it feels like they can’t really be bothered.
I needed the directions to a friends guest house on the Roman Wall in south east Northumberland - they sent directions to my Nav for a place near Inverness!

Finally managed to get BMW to add my car to my Connected-Drive account and then they tell me I have to take it to a dealer for them to update the MAP, because the car it too old being a 2012 model :o

I am assuming they will transfer the map to a USB drive and then plug it into the glove-box and update it. If so, why is that so difficult that I cannot do this? Heavy sigh......

Older cars needed an o/s update to allow them to use the USB update feature as I understand it..

ref loading the music into the jukebox...the reserved space for music is only about 12gb..

IMHO far better to use a 32gb USB stick in the centre armrest, plus supports more file types and indexes faster if you leave the disc with some space..

Thanks, that's what I'm doing as I like the album art feature. As for the o/s update I've already done some sort of update and the system does have the USB update function available?

Waiting for my local dealer to call me back as a Connected-Drive representative rang them.

Steve.

The saga continues..... my local dealer has rang and they can supply me with a USB stick and a code to install the Map and it'll be £145 (not a chance) or they can do it for £65 which is reasonable, so I'll be booking it in tomorrow to be done. Never, have I ever taken my car to a main dealer for any work to be done in over 20 years. I'll post an update in a few days when its sorted.

UPDATE:

As suspected, BMW cannot update my Sat Nav with their computer system and now need to order a USB drive with the map on to do it through the glovebox USB port

Steve.

I simple called my dealer and order the latest map up date on a USB stick, came with the activation code, £79. When I went to collect they came out, plugged it in, entered the code for me and started the update off. It took a day or so and couple of trips to be in long enough, just leave it, restarts it’s self as required.

Why did it take so long? Was it because the unit switched itself off? When I transferred alot of music mine auto switched off and to stop it happening I had to start the engine (only because I was in my garage, otherwise I would of gone for a drive. The map is approximately 22gb I believe.

Takes over an hour to copy over and load/reboot the system, my trip home from the dealership lasted about 45 mins, it was around 70- 80% done I think on the progress bar when I got home.

The dealership asked me to leave it with them and they'll ring me when it's done. I'll leave it one morning whilst at work and pick it up when they call. Going to book it in today.

The car is with BMW and they have informed me it will be connected to the mainframe and all relevant software/updates will be loaded onto the car and not via USB. They even offered to wash it and give it a health check free of charge, on top of driving me back to work. Bonus
