Update the DME software?

Folks - I posted a few weeks ago that I picked up a 2006 Z4 M roadster. I’ve gone through car now and corrected all of the issues it had and everything is working as it should. It runs and drives great.

My question: should I update the DME (and other modules) to the latest software version? The last time the DME was updated was in 2009. Anyone aware of any significant changes to the DME software since then?

Part of me wants to bring the software up to date, but there is the other part that says ‘if it’s not broke, don’t fix it’

Thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks

Unless your enabling/un-enableing things I wouldent bother. have a look at the m-track mode some of the guys here have enabled, that's a worthwhile change.

The latest DME software is version 7840449 I believe, for the roadster at least I think the Coupe is slightly different. That was in 2014, can't imagine it's been updated since then on a car that was no longer in production. Mostly fixed cold running problems was my understanding. Can you see what version you are on using the software you have?

Oh yes and I would say if it ain't broke......doesn't hurt to check though if you are curious.

I checked and my current software load is 7840451. Is there a reference or thread that details the changes for each software revision?

7840451 = 840S so you're already at the latest, although as Andy correctly states it's US software.

BMW don't include changelogs in the datens unfortunately.

Interesting, I didn’t think there would have been any updates past 2014! What does the 840S denote?

I know there seems to be slightly different versions for Roadster / Coupe and Euro / US specs. Is the 7840451 not the US spec software?

Yeah - the numerous software identifiers that BMW lists in the DME is quite confusing. Here is a screenshot of my DME readout from INPA. They note things like SW version, SW number, Program Ref, Daten Ref, etc.

I found this in the datens, I'm yet to have a dig through the differences in the actual bins yet.

I'll report back what I find!

OK...on the face of things the Roadster has slightly modified torque maps, different throttle maps, along with a lower top speed limiter lol of 253kph rather than 275kph of the Coupe. I'll do some more digging later.

Andy, you're correct.

7840461 = latest Euro, 451 = latest US.

@tomjonesBT33, can you read the AIF with WinKFP and post it here?

Lol, it's not something that's been added in the later software. Flash coupe software and you'll go faster lol.

Thanks for the updates, interesting the software has been updated since 2014 when BMW themselves updated mine at a main dealer. I guess it's an impossible question but do you think it's worth updating from my 0449 on the roadster? Must have been something they thought worth adjusting in the software...
Is it easy to DIY with ISTA for example?

Looking through the list, I’d venture that

BT93;;;7841210;SE

is the latest version, no? Just guessing based on numerical sequence. Unless this is the Coupe version vice the Roadster version??

Not quite, the version '7841210' is for a US roadster.

Here's the AIF from my bench MSS70, that was sent to me from a US LHD Roadster (VIN BT93). When it got here I updated it to the latest software, which you can see is the last entry in the AIF.

So it went from 820S (7838877) to 840S (7840451) when I did a 'Update ZUSB' using WinKFP, WinKFP always picks the latest appropriate software based on the installed datens.

I'll grab the AIF from my UK coupe in a bit.

This is from a UK roadster, that had never had any update, so was on 730S, and is going to be updated to 840S.

Ok so based on that 7840449 is the latest version for UK Roadster? Which is what I’m on so happy with that!

Hi Martyn, I have used WinKPF and in my case, the software has identified *212 as an update

My car is a DU93 (LHD US Coupe), if I wanted to move it to LHS EU software, as I have Euro exhaust, etc what would be the steps on WinKFP to move to that software? is it possible or it goes by VIN.

Instead of using 'Update ZUSB' you can simply do 'Choose ZUSB', select MSS70 and chose the software version (7840461) you want to flash.
