UPDATE Speed van - how long until the ticket comes through?

A few years ago my wife and I shared the school run but not on any kind of regular rota so I might do it one morning and my wife the next. The journey took us through a village with a 30 mph limit. One day the dreaded police letter arrived that said the car had been clocked at 39mph by a hidden hand held camera and the driver should fill in the form admitting to it. As the 'offence' was the previous week my wife and I genuinely could not remember which one of us was driving. I wrote back stating this to receive a reply which basically said "tough we need one of you to admit it and if you don't it will go to court and the judge will decide who he/she wants to find guilty". They also included a photograph(still got it) of the vehicle which was from the rear and you could not even see the driver let alone identify them. I made enquiries and the legal precedent that says in our law that a person does not have to incriminate themselves (could be a murderer or other heinous crime), does not apply in this type of case. Just another kicking for the motorist, what about being innocent until proven guilty! I had to take the points as my wife had held a completely clean licence for 20 years, mine was clean again with some points coming off 2 years before. The chances are it was probably me anyway, although we will never really know.

I assume that this was North of the Border? If so you do realise we don't get speed awareness courses so its points and a fine only. Hopefully you've not got anything but unfortunately we don't seem to be as forgiving up here.

Bugger. Yeah was on the Kingsway in Dundee. They have 40mph, 50mph and 70mph sections. Just to keep you on your toes....! And I wasn't paying attention :headbang:

Oops! Mike has a calibrated digital speedo and got done for 78 on the M9 on a glorious day, he had to take evasive action as some old dear just pulled on to the motorway doing no speed at all just as it goes from 3 lanes to 2. To make it worse the picture they sent shows this stupid car in the inside as he was passing. Got his back up no end.

Hopefully if nothing within 14 days then all good. As per the 'Tayside Saftey Camera partnership' http://www.safetayside.co.uk/faqs.html

Its 10% plus 2mph so at 70 its 79 , 60 its 68 etc etc 57, 46, 35...

We don't really apply that logic up here. England, Wales and Northern Ireland deal with all Road Traffic offenses differently to Scotland and that will be because we have our own laws, unfortunately.

Hmm, that makes 30mph zone 35mph. I still got to do the course at 41mph.

I think the 10% + 2mph limit means you will get 'done', and then above that 10% + 9mph is the upper limit for the course.

Check the Acpo recommendations

And ACPO states

The Association of Chief Police Officers provides oversight through chief officers across the police service in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to a number of national policing units, agencies and projects.

So that won't include Scotland then unless i'm missing something??

Good look Adamski,

cruise control is your friend,

Not always ... especially on the M4 where the speed reduces from 70 to 60 and the camera is about 500 yards down..

Not sure I understand this comment blue, if I see the speed limit gets lower, I slow down and reset cruise to the new speed limit.

I think Scotland applies 10% + 2mph too. So a friendly copper told me once

Unlucky Adam, sucks that you guys don't get speed awareness courses :(

...and of course any assertions I may have made about your driving style are completely untrue, potentially libellous, and just bad form :D

IF they do use it, it's a guideline/recommendation and not a rule. I think people need to keep that in mind.

Thats the point though, the distance is so short that you can miss the change of speed. I know the stretch well and I missed it once and thought I was snapped (thanks to the cruise) but either wasnt over the limit or was lucky..

The speed awareness course focuses a lot on concentration, observation and awareness giving you space and time to react... They (and any copper) would argue that if you were concentrating then you wouldn't miss the speed change

Don't think you get the option of a speed awareness course in Scotland.

Correct  advised when Adam confirmed it was Dundee. If he had been caught South of the border then he would have still been given the option. Never quite understood why they don't offer them here. Considering they do Saftey awareness in high schools to 17 and 18 year olds.

Sorry, I know we established that and should have been clearer - my comments related to Bluestreak saying that the change in speed limit comes too quickly before the camera.

Oh, and sharing some of the education I paid for, for free :D

I can't help thinking that rather than making the process of navigating our way around the road system of the UK easy, the authorities seem content to make it as difficult as possible and throw as many potential banana skins in as they can.

So many of the so called "accident blackspots", where the dreaded vans lie in wait, are actually just very badly designed roads, or roads carrying the level of traffic that they just weren't designed for, but have not been upgraded or relieved of traffic as they should've been. So you and I pay for our lack of concentration.
