Tyres

Both Z4's I bought and my X5 came with tyres that were "legal" but under 3mm. I have never run a tyre down to the legal limit (1.6mm?) due to wet weather grip and being in the UK - One of the reasons people decide to sell their cars is often the thought of having to shell out for 4 new tyres.
Obviously I disagree with it being madness to discard part worns and fit new - dont know about a pump though. But we all have opinions , sharing them is what this forum is about
Enuf_Zed should know all about the differenec in Preventative time based maintenance and On Condition if he has a Tonka background.

I have been following this thread and am amazed by all the different opinions on Part Worns, whilst legally they may be regulated and all inspected this forum is full of people spending quite a lot of cash on keeping their cars pristine. Personally the first thing I do when buying a vehicle is to put fresh rubber all around as the tyres are already part worn - they last a couple of years generally and more importantly you get the benefit of the fresh rubber, especially in the wet with full depth tread probably around 8mm. Saving a few quid on tyres in my opinion is a false economy when its your life and helps protect your (probably) second largest investment.
If you buy a part worn with 5mm of tread that gives you 3mm of rubber to use which equates to half the mileage of a new tyre - If it costs on average £10 to mount/balance a tyre then thats another £80 plus about £2 a tyre disposal so you are actually paying an extra £100 to add on to the cost of your part worns against a new ( even budget) brand new tyre which usually include fitting and disposal.

Just my opinion but dont skimp on grip when you have just bought a car that loves to be driven into and out of corners at obviously legal speeds!

I agree with you if I buy a car with less then 3mm of thread I replace the tyres too. My current Zed came with tyres that were very close to 3mm on the rear and almost new on the front but I changed all 4 since they were crappy runflats to brand new Goodyears. However the cost saving (at least back in the day) was huge for runflats compared to brand new. That tyre shop I mentioned used to mount balance a part worn on average for around 10 GBP (for normal cars) even if you purchased a non branded brand new tyre you would still be looking at around 40 GBP per tyre so this works out a fraction of the cost.

On average brand new tyres have around 7mm thread so if you buy a part worn with 5mm or 6mm you are still getting a lot of use out of it. Ultimately for me it depends on how long I am going to keep the car, if I am looking to move the car along I would consider part worn but if I am going to keep the car I'd buy brand new. As for safety from the years dealing with the motor trade and with the tyre shop never have I heard of any issues with regards to things like blows outs etc with part worns. The tyres are checked in Germany before being exported and the tyre shop would check them again before and after mounting them to the wheel. Usually any structural damage can be seen. Remoulds now that is a different matter!

Another hand up for the Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 5s. Just paid £75 a corner fitted at my local tyre shop. A different car afterwards  :driving:
What were you on before?

Yep, brilliant tyres that suit Zed's so well. Great price too.

Just a quick thought to add - my 20i has Potenza RFT's and the fronts are nearly new but the rears will need replacing soon. Is the tyre garage guy right when he says that if I want to put non-RFT's on the back I have to put them on the front as well? Not really wanting to ditch nearly new tyres, unless there's a market for used RFT's?

If I stick with them for a matching set they're about £130 each, but non RFT's are about £100 each, so I'm looking at either £400 for 4 new ones or stick with the existing ones and save £140. For those that have changed, is it worth the extra to change completely? The car will be used for a mix of local posing (by the wife, ahem) and more spirited driving when I can get the keys off her.

Happy to sell you the Potenza RFTs that just came off mine...10K miles on the car from new, they are undamaged and was told by the QuikFitter that they had a good 6mm treat all around...they are harsh by comparison to the PS4S!

Cheers, but I'll pass, thanks. If anything I'd be looking to shift my fronts so maybe someone wants a set!

Fitting non run flats to the rear and leaving the run flats on the front isn’t really a problem and the garage should allow it. Mixing across axles is the big no-no.

Having said that, just get rid of the front run flats too. The improvement in ride, grip, steering - everything, is so much so that mixing them is just wasting your money.
Yes you can sell the RFs. Some people think that they are good (they are wrong of course).

When I bought my Zed I was in the exact same position like you, two rears were shot and needed to be replaced but the fronts were like new. All four were Bridgestone run flats. Even though the fronts were like new the poor quality of ride the noise and just overall rubbish drive from the runflats made me change all four tyres at once and I got some non runflats Goodyear Eagle Asy 3s and boy I am I glad I did! The difference is night and day!

It didn't even occur to me that I could have sold the two runflats from the front and I just left them with the tyre shop, I guess if I were to do it again I would sell them since it seems some people don't mind them but I would encourage anyone to just get rid and get some decent tyres the difference in how the car drives makes it all worth while.

Thanks for the replies guys. As we won't be doing mega mileage my mind was pretty much made up to change all of them at once as it'll be a long time before 4 newish ones wear out again.

I'll see what deal I can get on 4 decent branded ones later today hopefully.

Change them all! I’ve just put Yokohama non RFT’s on the rear, leaving RFT’s on the front, just running round town no issue, but took it for a longer run yesterday, f.ck me, actually scary. Tram lining and weaving like like crazy. And the fronts actually letting go on a couple of ‘spirited’ tight, corners😲. Woke up this morning and ordered fronts straight away

Don't mix them - especially to save only £140 - It will cost more than that for a tow out of the ditch!

Kwik fit are currently doing 10% discount on Michelins , the code is michtyre
If you work for the NHS they also have a 10% off any tyres or service of theirs.
Do home fitting too.

Costco till May 31st

£40 inc vat off a set of two or £80 inc VAT off a set of four 18” Michelin car, van, 4x4 or Taxi tyres,
£50 inc vat off a set of two or £100 inc VAT off a set of four 19” and above Michelin car, van, 4x4 or Taxi tyres purchased.

I was ready to pull the trigger on a set of MIchelin PS4 at the start of the season but the restrictions mean I won’t get as much use out of them as I should - I will leave the runflats on for another year and buy the Michelin rubber next year!

That’s the plan

I bought mine a few weeks before lockdown, they’re still in the shed

Mine would have been fitted and the car would have been mainly standing on them

I think if you keep them dry and out of sunlight they’ll be ok. Don’t stack them sidewall to sidewall tho.

The Costco price looks good until you have to factor in fitting them, whereas the Kwikfit offer presumably includes it?
I'll speak to the local tyre shop as they normally try to price match the big guns and I like to give them the trade as they've helped me out a few times over the years.

I has a set of Michelin PS4's fitted at Costco yesterday. 225/40/18 and 255/35/18 £380 all in fitted with the £80 off. Kwik Fit after the 10% discount were coming in at £472 and Blackcircles were there or there abouts. If you've got access to Costco I honestly think its your best bet whilst this offer is still on.

Ah, sorry - didn't realise Costco prices included fitting. Thought it was just a cash and carry place!

Shame I don't think there's one near me
