Tyre foam

Hi all I have replaced my rft and wondered what brand of tyre foam or solution people use having no rft or a spare wheel!
Regards Zach

I've always used Holt's Tyre Weld on previous cars with no spare but I've been lucky enough to never need to use it too ..rumour (urban myth?) was always that if you used it then no-one would repair the tyre ..so also interested to know if there's anything better too :)

My teenage son had to use the Smart/Mercedes system (electric pump an can of goo) in anger a few years back. With good results. I spoke to the garage about this system after the tyre was repaired, they said the good systems Merc,BMW and the one I carry Continental are all very efficient and the tyre is easy to clean out with plain water after use.

:driving:

The 'M's have the BMW 'mobility system' fitted as there is no spare. I also have a couple of tins of Holts Tyreweld as a back up. Never had to use any of them yet though! General opinon is the BMW system is far better than a tin of tyreweld as it includes a proper pump to reinflate tyre.

I bought myself a compressor from Halfords when I fitted my non run-flats, it fits perfectly under the panel in the boot (next to the battery).

I figured that if I have a regular (repairable) puncture then that should be enough to get me to a tyre shop. After all, if the tyre is completely shredded then no amount of foam will help, and once foam is used the tyre can't be repaired.

Brought myself a brand new mobility kit, from a Ford :? , for less than a tenner on eBay.

A brand new BMW Mobility kit, manufactured by Continental Tyres, is over £100 so I sourced a cheaper alternative.

+1 on the mobility kits, mine came ready fitted, and they do look a tad expensive on ebay for the bmw ones. Can't see why another other one wouldn't be a good choice, and £10 sounds a bargain! I have heard that the sealant has an expiry date, so you may want to check any sourced outside of dealers....

How long can the gunk be used for I wonder and at what speeds?

I'm going down to Germany in the summer and wonder what happens if i get a puncture - I gather tyres cannot be repaired in Germany. I would hate to chuck a tyre away with only 2k use!

I looked into the tyre sealant that can be left in the tyre - I have it in the wife's Passat - and that can be left in permanent, no problems. However when I looked into it for the zed, was informed that the tyre walls are too small and it can cause imbalance in the wheels, so its not recommended. On that basis, I would only use it as a temporary fix and get to the nearest fitters for a tyre replacement straight away. You can always carry/freight your tyre if you want to keep it.

holts tyreweld does no harn to the tyre and it can be repaired but most tyre repair centres dont want to do it as its a messy job washing all the foam out

I see the Slime people do a mobility kit which you can buy for around £25 from eBay. Does anyone know if this is suitable?

Does the ford mobility kit fit in the boot next to the battery? Looking to change my run flats very soon

Yes
Am on the hunt for a mobility kit but surely it must be tiny to fit next to the battery in the boot?
Nothing as cheap as a tenner on ebay at the minute, not that the price worries me as long as it fits under the false floor next to the battery am a happy man :D

As long as you separate the compressor and gunk they should sit side by side in that space adjacent to the battery. The BMW mobility kit comes in a zip up bag which won't fit. Keep your eyes peeled on eBay.

Here's one:-

There's not enough room to stow anything much next to my battery. There's a bit of electrical gubbins in there which takes up a load of space.

My compressor and two cans of gunk are just wedged in the side of the boot space!

FWIW - didn't know this before as I though it was stock bmw, but the mobility kit stored in the back of mine is actually in an Alpina holder that fits snugle in the LHS cubby hole:
