Tyre Choice

I'm sure that this topic has been done to death, but can't seem to find a thread.

Its time to change tyres, as doubt they'll get through MOT, so lots of choices out there, but just wondered what the concensus of opinion might be, for grip v wear. I'm not really looking to change from standard sizes 225 45 18 up front, and 255 40 18 at the rear.

Done plenty of searching on tinterweb, and whilst not after anything cheap and cheerful, but looking for a premium trye, and would consider something as radical like an Toyo R1R, or sensible like a Yokohama V103, or stick with a reliable Bridgestone RE050A.

I'm in the Leeds / York area, so if anyone knows of a tyre dealer in the area that does good deals for cash, then I'm all ears. So suggestions are welcomed.

I've also recently put Vredestein's on all round, but to be honest I'm not the sort of driver that notices the difference tyres make!

I've got Michelin PS2's and they deserve the praise heaped upon them tbh; the ride is a little softer than the OEM contis, which I prefer.

The tyres seem to hold more heat than the contis and produce more grip in the dry because of it, wet grip isn’t quite as good as OEM. My car doesn’t come out in the rain so that’s not a problem for me.

Budget dependant, I would buy in this order:

Mich PS2
Falken Fk452
Goodyear Eagle F1
Toyo T1R

100% no to Conti's - utter dogshit.

Never had a problem with the standard Conti's, but I'm not a driving god :P

I also like the PS2s, but don't believe they're worth £50/corner more when I'd only get 10,000 miles out of the rears.

I'm also interested in trying the new ContiSportContact 5P (which came 1st & 2nd respectively in the recent AutoBild and Sport Auto tests).

If you're not driving the car with a bit of vigour, then I don't think you'll need the PS2 tyre, and you can put almost anything from the major brands on without worrying too much - just depends how much you want to spend. The magazine tests above also showed that the Hankook Ventus S1 Evo was as good as or better than the PS2 for 25% less cost - and the best in the wet.

I've recently put Vredestein Ultrac's, and I'm very happy with them. They stood up to a track day at the ring with no problems, very predictable grip + decent wear.

Wet grip is hard to guage as I'm comparing them to dogshit Avon ZZ3's that were past their best.

Great price though, from Camskill.

I am one of the few on here who thinks the OE Contis are pretty good for road use - I find them excellent in the wet and very capable in the dry... Mind you I do have suspension and geometry improvements over the standard set up, so that probably gets more out of them. I also experimented with tyre pressures to get the optimum for me (I run higher pressures than most on here seem to like).

I will try alternatives when the time comes though (I like to compare)... I don't yet know how the Contis perform on track.

My wife has Vreds on her Z4C and likes them.... We are both also fans of Falken FK452 - Awesome tyre for the money, very under-rated (Road & Track, Wet or Dry - takes it all in its stride and delivers consistent performance).

PS2's I have tried before on a different car; the grip in the dry was staggering, wet grip just okay, but the wear rate was unacceptable given the cost to replace them.

I am hearing really good things about Good Year Eagle F1 Assymetrics - Tempting :D

Thanks for all the info.

I can get a good deal on the Yokohama's so think I may go that way. I'll post some notes once I've scrubbed them in. Could be another option for folk to consider.

ive tried a few different brands, the best so far ps2, dry grip is awesome, plus they dont squeal, at all, they are imo over priced.

Hankook VENTUS V12 EVO K110

great tires and imo the best price for value real hardcore tires
The ones i've got right now are the PIRELLI CORSA from the Lamborghini (the car comes directly with those tires.
Real hardcore tires but very expensive. I will probably go next summer with the HANKOOK.
