Trickle charger on the M - options/advice?

Not getting the M on the road as often as I would like and after not running it for the last 2 weeks I'm wondering about using a trickle charger (as I used to on my motorcycles through the winter). I have an Optimate III which I've used for years. What is the Ah of the M battery though? This Optimate will condition and maintain batteries to 28 Ah and I'm guessing the M will be a higher rating?

Anyone have one fitted on their M? What do you recommend? Cheers.

A lot on the forum use a ctek charger
Various ones in the range but the mxs5 iirc is a popular one, an sometimes on offer on Amazon

I have used my Ctek for years on different cars and vans, it always does the job. I use it on my Nissan 4x4 and that has a large 90ah battery, always keeps it charged.

Thanks folks - there's a £40 CteK version and then it jumps (no pun intended) to £100 - anyone know if the cheaper one will work on the M or do I need to go for the more expensive option?

Unless you have an AGM battery the CTEK 3.8 will do the job just fine and is probably the minimum spec model to use on a full size car lead-acid battery. I use mine whenever the Zed's not used for a couple of weeks and has kept the battery A1 due to it's cycle function that effectively restores cells. In fact it's still on it's original (date stamped) 2003 battery which must be a record!?

Tanya have the 3.8 at a decent price https://www.tayna.co.uk/CTEK-MXS-3.8-Charger-and-Conditioner-P9410.html

Another Ctek here. I don't put in on until the car has been standing for two weeks. So it doen't go on very often. Used it once so far this year. Much better than a flat battery.

The CTEK 3.8 does work for AGM batteries too....(below copied from CTEK's manual for the 3.8 model).

"fully automatic charging cycle Battery types All types of 12V lead-acid batteries (WET, MF, Ca/Ca, AGM and GEL) Battery capacity 1.2–80Ah up to 130Ah"

The MXS5.0 is only £58 including free delivery on Amazon. Must be worth it over the 3.8 which on the link above is about £2 cheaper once delivery charges are factored in.

I use the 3.8 on my Z any time it will be sitting for more than a couple of days. PVR always kept it on charge as well. The battery is now almost 10 years old !

Good to know Bing - thanks - how have you got your trickle charge set up?

OK, so it's not an M. But this is what I installed today. It's running a recondition cycle right now.

Thanks Nick - (the M bit is about whether it runs a higher powered battery and whether I need a consequently higher rated charger that's all)

Problem for me is the M stays outside under a full cover and I want to wire in the charger in a way that I can plug in externally and leave the M locked. The motorcycles were in the garage and wired for a simple plug at the edge of the fairing plastics. With the battery in the boot the access is made more difficult. . . .

Mine (also not an //M) uses the MXS5; I have it wired in through the boot, and its easy to lay an extension cable in there - the lead isn't compressed much by placing it at one of the boot lid corners and closing the boot lid down. Its worked brilliantly at keeping my Bosch S6 battery fully charged and conditioned - last winter the car had hardly any action as I was overseas for most of the year, battery was perfect when I finally got a chance to go for a drive

I've just paid £60 for an mxs5 from Amazon.

It's worth checking they are the latest model 5 with the red selector button and come with the UK plug as I know when I was looking to replace my busted ctek 3.6 some dealers were flogging old or euro stock of the 5, but otherwise that's a good price for the mxs5

..... Keep receipts as they come with a 5 year warranty now, my old 3.6 packed up after about 4 years but it was only 3 years cover back then.
