Transmission Temperature warning E89

Hello All,

I am writing to discuss an issue related to transmission
1)
I have been experiencing the following error on my E89 35i; please see picture.

When I go easy on the car all good, then, but not every single time, the message start to pop after a few pull offs, or when the car is idling in parking mode.
2)
This has been going on for some time, as I said, on and off; but recently after the “transmission temperature” error pops, the car prevents me from changing gear and keeps itself on gear 1, if I switch to 2-7, the instrument cluster register the switch but mechanically nothing happens. Following to this the car was jerking a bit and also another error popped (Engine Fault reduced power – possible to continue your journey)
At this point I pull over wait give or take 30 minutes. I turn the car back on and like nothing happens.
The cycle repeat itself if for some time I start to do pulls off or keep the car on idle stationary in parking mode.

The car is over 100k, been looked after all the time. However, I was meant before covid to change the gearbox oil and all of the transmission filters, and also the flywheel.
I think this the pretty much what is causing this, but I would like some feedback from those seasoned members I have been in contact with in the past years, for which I have always appreciated their feedback.

3) For the change of sensor, I think this must be the one: 28107842851 (RPM and temperature sensor - GS7D36SG)
However, in schedule of the newTIS (28 10 020 - Removing and installing or replacing combination sensor GS7D36SG), there is not a lot of guidance. It just states to remove the transmission and preliminary.

Please can you advice on the above 3 points, possibly in a point-by-point fashion to avoid ambiguity and multiple replies for clarification etc.

Many thanks

Max Shepherd

First stage on the DCT is always change the oil and filters…then take it from there…most ‘faults’ on the DCT are low / old oil ..

Have a look at the old oil for debris and discolouration.

Hello B21,

Thanks for your quick reply. I was actually thinking of you, as in "I hope he is the one to reply" lol

Really appreciated.

If I change the oil and filters in gear box and then later do the flywheel, is the gearbox going to piss oil everywhere when I remove it again? I think it is encased well though, so should not do that. Maybe will drip a bit through the lines from the cooler (I have not gone through the NewVis at length as yet).

Or else I would strike 2 birds with one stone and do both oil and flywheel

Cheers

Max

Oil change is relatively trivial level of work required…if there are no leaks from the other access plates on the sides and top then IMHO leave it there…

But ..if you wanted to change the DMFW the recommendation is to go to the M2/M4 lighter version..that way once you push the BHP past 500bhp you won’t get the mysterious cyl 6 misfire…

Hey B21,
What would be the part number for the lighter version the part for the one I m supposed to fit is 21207590853, so which part number is the one you suggest please?

Thanks and a very merry Christmas!

Hello B21, and happy new year.

I am just about to buy the flywheel this week. I have looked at 21212283829; this is not meant for the E89. I trust your judgement but:
  1. Are the dowel/bolt requirements different for this one?
  2. Do I need any further additional modifications?
  3. Finally will not cause driveline Noise, Vibration, and Harshness changes?
Many thanks

Hello since I’ve not fitted mine, I can’t vouch for it in anyway …

Others have not mentioned any of the issues you raised..the only observation was that the engine revved quicker…
