Track day..... Black flagged :-( @ Donny.

Great evening at Donny , loved it BUT..... For some reasons the car would occasionally go into limp mode under breaking into a corner and the (!) in yellow pops up with a beep then the car would need to be turned on and off, which was pretty frustrating in the middle of a track day.... No CEL light nothing... Really strange. Maybe the boosted motor didn't like the heat but never done that before, will do a lil check over and replace some stuff!

Outside of that 7 red flags and I got black flagged so I needed to put in my exhaust bungs ( wondering if the back pressure was causing the limp mode as it started after i put those in :P )

Absolutely killed a 991 turbo S and a fair few things on track then after the black flag I got battered by everything as i need to back off the gas, not sure where the mic is so i just went slower and got bullied by everything, the love the car received was pretty eye opening. overall EPIC bar the amount of offs!

Looks great fun Byron. What tyres are you using on the track these days?

WAS sooooo cooool! tyres are Ns2R which really struggled on such a high speed track , they need to go....... also ive lost my track pads when we extended the workshop so i think one of th elads has thrown them away      and i ran the fast road pads which did REALLY great but were struggling -i really need to buy another set of pads for the track. The track day reminded me just how capable this thing is, if the car doesn't go by late aug / september then i shall keep it for another year or so and change the tyres, get a fresh geo and have a year of trackdays and enjoy the build to fullest, not a bad position to be in either way.

What pads are you running ??

I’ve got a set of ex-BTCC control pads in mine that I got through a contact of TomK. Unfortunately, I’ve not really had a chance to test them in anger yet because life is keeping me away from the track at the moment.
Tyre-wise I’m using Nankang AR-1. Like the NS-2R they’re fairly inexpensive but they perform as well as many of the big name track tyres. They seem to tolerate high temps and multiple heat cycles far better than the NS 2R, which is especially important with the track temperatures here.

You should have said you were booked in for a trackday Byron, I'd have tried to pop by, I'm only half an hour or so from donny! Glad to hear you had a good one, shame about the limp mode though, keep us all posted on what the codes are? What sort of times were you getting before the issues?

Those exhaust bungs have always worried me, especially on fi setups - to my mind it just significantly increases the heat buildup. I'd rather a better silenced exhaust than shoving a huge restriction in it and then placing the engine under significant stress on track. Just me though

Also stupid question re tyres - were you keeping a careful eye on pressures and adjusting them regularly? That can have a massive effect on prolonging life of the tyres and extending the time you can drive them hard before they overheat. Sorry if that's teaching you to suck eggs :P

Let me know if you fancy a meet up at some point dude, be nice to compare how your seat setup feels compared to mine too

Are those the Raybestos ST45s? I've got a set, they're mega! Pedal feel is very sharp but incredibly consistent right from cold, and you can just lean on them so hard. Very impressed. One thing I had been told though is to ensure they are dry stored. If left wet or damp the moisture can get into the compound and oxidise it, and if bad enough they can supposedly fall apart next time used hard...

I've had mine a few years (admittedly life has got in the way of trackdays for me too), I just swap them in for trackdays and swap them out again afterwards.

i WANT a set, have you got a contact please? Do they properly sweep the rotor face as some of them are a far bit smaller pad contact.

I didn't realise you were so close, it only took me 30 mins to get their, times wise it didn't get that serious but i will say i had a go at the turbo S in the videos and mullered it.... i got stuck in traffic and then he got me at the chicance before the straight, i could get the power down and he went , but up to that point, cornered, breaking and the straights he could not get past.

i need those pads! LINK PLEASE ,
Ns2r simply couldn't cope with the temps and by the end of the laps i felt ZERO confidence in them, but one more track day will finish them.

BTW i totally agree about the bungs the back pressure must be increased however in my case you bung the larger exit on each side but it can still make it out the other exhaust on on each bank unrestricted, i.w i dont think its adding much restriction BUT... i will say the limp mode started after i put them in so... who knows, the cars at the workshop so im going to go and wash it tomorrow, run some codes on it. Also my tillet seats creaks which is annoying BUT i think its the sliders which tillet ask you to not use on the race circuit so i need to lube those up. TBH best day ive had in AGES. Car felt absolutely mighty.

Malc buck is your man off the m3 cutters forum - he does/did sell the part worn pads off the btcc cars for not much money.... However.... I think btcc changed approach on consumables (reducing amount of stuff like discs and pads teams can go through per race weekend), so there are far fewer knocking around - and they're not cheap new....!
