Yes the engine runs fine we brought it as a crash write off. It sounded crazy with no exhaust :evil:
 
Matt, I've just bought a 3D printer and I'm going to start designing a single seat track car, so if you want a new project........
 
Ha ha yeah I should have some Sapir time when this is done!!

In all seriousness if I can help I will. I am guessing your going to print components for a model. If you need any bits making out of metal or machining doing please ask. That sounds fun.

I will want a very cheap one when they go into production though :thumbsup:
 
The new home 3d printers are years ahead of the one we have at work. It was a very early model provably 5+ years old now.n
 
I'm going to attempt to design a full sized single seater based on the 1966 Eagle, but print it scaled so that the monocoque is 500 mm or so.
 
looks really good were do you find the time. that workshop is just what I need and the 2 poster is great really makes light work of it when working on the car get the sofa dome and I will come and make the coffee for you lol :wink:
 
Well my brother in-law is getting rid of a conservatory soon. It will either be a chill out area with a straight six coffee table and Lexus barge seats. So you can come make the coffee :thumbsup: Or more likely it might be a clean area for building composite parts. We are looking into making moulds and then carbon bits n bobs.

Hopefully the supra will be at the next track day Ian :thumbsup:
 
Been busy making some bits for supra.
Engine mounts are now bang on and ready to go it. Took another 12mm off. The engine will now be as low as it can go. so that'sabout 30mm off the mounts in total.

Then made a spacer ring for a pulley as we removed some bits we didnt need. And washers seemed like a bodge.

And made a stainles steel water pipe fitting the plastic one was not what was needed.


All this has got me thinking about what i can do in my engine bay. I have been thinking about fitting a different bigger rad with a home made aluminum expatiation tank.

A metal header tank would be a good idea, I know the ones in the E46 are prone to splitting. Unless you're having cooling issues I wouldn't bother with the rad.
 
I have had problems with cooling on the one drift day i have done. I am hopping the oil cooler will help but its only little.
 
Hello no BMW build fans. Its been a busy few weeks at our workshop. My car has taken a back seat again but hopefully now my work on the Supra is nearing an end i can get cracking on mine.

So what have we done.... We have tided up a lot of engine bits. And welded fittings on to crank cases. Brought modded and fitted new trigger wheel for the crank sensor. The amazing ECU has arrived and generally been busying away making fixing painting and sorting all the little bits that take so much time but need doing.

And that's not all... We had been putting off work on the gearbox for a few reasons. 1 it being very difficult 2 it was going to cost quite a bit to perches all the clutch parts. We we started it and its finished. It seems to have gone very well but we wont know for sure until we actually try using it.

The steps
1 try splitting the BMW 5 Speed zf gearbox. These are know to be rock solid and to take 700BHP and lots of Torque. This didn't go well and we had to (Chris brought) A 20 tone press this thing is so cool and up there with the 2 post lift on things a workshop needs.

Next up was lots and lots of checking building taking apart marking scratching heads. We had to make an alignment bush to center the gearbox input shaft in the back of the engine then mouth the clutch. But we got there and we had this.


Next up we had to cut the Toyota/Lexus bell housing to match the the BMW ZF gearbox.

And after it was all cut them machined flat and parallel. It was much cleaning and prepping to weld it all together. Hear it is on my bench after being tacked in place on the car. It is now done.

And Chris has brought some very very nice wheels. 19"x11" for the rear and 19" x9 1/2" for the front. We have checked and clearance is all good. This thing will look mental :thumbsup:

 
That's some fine work, especially on the gearbox, I bet there are some pretty tight tolerances for concentricity and perpendicularity to make sure the shafts align.

Oh and love the wheels, they're going to look epic
 
Yep the alignment bush was very easy to make but i gave myself a 0.05mm Tolerance not mega tight but hard enough to achieve on my old battered manual lathe. The rest was quite straight forward cutting the bell housings so they are the correct length was ok. But figuring out what length and then getting the diameters correct on 2 differently tapered bell housings was tricky.
Once the diameters and lengths where sorted we cut the BM box fitted it all up then simple measure from the back of the engine to the BM bell housing 105mm cut it on a band saw then milled the surface flat.

The wheels are crazy the dish concave on the front is massive the rears are totally crazy!!
