Touring range on full tank M car ?

For those curious who have yet to switch from their current Zs to the M variant for worries over fuel consumption ( there are a few currently wavering  ) after 1050 miles of varying demands , roads & speeds i have a reading of 29mpg zerod at the off last Sunday .
Wherever forced i followed the speed limits , where it was unclear what they were i may have slightly exceeded them :driving:
For those number crunchers looking for specific figures if you put in £30 at £1.20/litre you can expect 140 touring miles
All tolled about £220/£240 which was under the £300 i expected for 1000 miles proving the Z4M to be a great all round performance car

That's of interest - your figure beats my 840 miles road trip and a weekend trip to Wales, which both came out below your figure, in my 3.0si despite transit mileage at a steady motorway cruise of legal limit + 10%+1 as well as the hooning :o

:driving:

Could be the roads chosen in Scotland ? Very few stops RE traffic lights/junctions or roundabouts once in the more remote parts so quite easy to cover 60/80 miles at 60/80mph for the majority with the odd slow spell & more than the odd spirited spell
26 was the lowest it dropped to after the Cairngorms day but the run down from Lochness to Loch Lomond was almost non stop 60-80 for around 100miles barring the towns or stop offs
More than impressed tbh

Was showing 32.1mpg for the steady (speed limit +10kph) from Calais to Adenau this morning, until we hit 3 sets of traffic-light controlled roadworks. Still covered the 331 miles with 58 miles remaining on the range when I filled up in Adenau before heading onto the Ring at about 2:30pm

The first 6 laps of the Ring this afternoon showed about 11mpg

Luckily 102 RON at the ARAL in Adenau was only 109p/litre

Spotted a couple of UK Z4Ms in the car park too (didn't see them on track though).

Only downside is the car has suddenly started to run very hot (e.g. 120-125 oil temp and the occasional water temp light) - symptoms started in heavy traffic on the M25 yesterday afternoon and I just thought it was the warm weather and hour sitting in traffic at 10-20mph. Car was fine on the run down to Nurburg, sitting at just below the 100 mark, but even of the first couple of laps taking it easy the temp was rising way more than it should. Water & oil levels are fine so will have to take it easy (i.e. no more than 3 laps at a time) and investigate when I get home :headbang:

On the plus side, the suspension & brakes are holding up well, and the car is absorbing the bumps on the Ring much better. The Karrussel is especially surprising as I'm no longer fighting the car to stay in the groove.

120C is hot but not unheard of with heavy track use especially in the summer. However, seeing that in traffic is unusual. Are you certain you have adequate coolant? There's a bleed valve on the expansion tank that you can unscrew with a coin. I would try opening this to see if water or air emerge. When Chiswick BMW returned my car to me with almost no coolant at all, the level indicated by the expansion tank float was normal. Releasing the valve evacuated a load of air and revealed the system to be empty bar the volume in the expansion tank.

If it's any consolation, yesterday I developed a misfire that wouldn't clear on track (fortunately I had my Westy there too so still got to drive). I changed the plugs today and the car now runs like an absolute peach. I'd not appreciated that it had been gradually getting lumpier and losing power over the last few months. To my shame, I can't recall when last I changed the plugs

Are the fans operating on the front of the rad ?

My M roady had a faulty fan pack and it would flick the hot water light on..... Its easy to change, very easy in fact..

You can also power the fan via the diag machine,so diagnosis is easy...

Coolant was last changed last year, and isn't showing any drop.

Oil was changed 3 weeks ago and all was fine until the Thursday commute on the M25 - oil level still good.

Fan comes on as soon as temp goes above about 110c - and stays on for a while after the engine has been switched off.

I'm guessing the rad or oil cooler isn't as efficient as they were, so will investigate when I get home.

Have found one way to keep it cool(er) is just to short shift (at about 5000rpm). Peak speeds don't seem to have been affected much as I wasn't going 10/10ths anyway, but some corners are a bit much in 4th and I pop down to 3rd for those (and still shift up as soon as possible).

Did see the water temp light go from amber to red for one lap though - although I did get a bit carried away keeping pace with a couple of Porsches being driven at a slow enough pace for me to (a GT2 CS and GT3 RS) :P

Saw a good few Z4Ms there too today - one blue Z4MC, stripped out with a big wing and front spoiler on nice 19" BBS wheels and Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, an Imola Z4M Roadster, a Sepang Bronze Z4MC and a 3.0 coupe.

Did I mention I really like my new suspension

Just got 306 miles on mine, the last few very nervously, seems better on shell than tesco etc.

Yep, i only ever consider myself to have 250 miles per tank so I have some reserve to get to a decent garage. Same as some other members, my MPG readout is always around 23/24mpg with a mix of driving.

The computer on mine normally reckons on 260-270 miles from a full tank but i don't think i've ever paid any attention to what i actually get. I'll try and keep an eye on it this coming week as i'll be doing a fair bit of driving through france.

Last year i managed about 28mpg over a 2500 mile trip so it'll be interesting to see how it does this year!

Enjoy your time in Scotland .........
Just remember that Scottish plod is everywhere, and in my experience ........ points on yer licence are easy to collect :driving:

Update this post now as after 4500 miles ive got the numbers crunched
Everyday use the car sits at 23/24 & that's it , no more no less over a mix of driving conditions & speeds
Long motorway journeys the car really impresses me
After just completing 325 UK miles zero'd from the off i averaged 57mph / 33.5mpg & the car would have managed 350 miles on a full tank of V power (80 miles on range & i filled up at 270 no light on )
Crossed the channel & the numbers dropped eye wateringly by comparison but much more enjoyable :driving:
Free autoroute , zero'd again . 265 miles average shown 77mph / 24.5mpg & needed fuel after 210 miles (range showed 60 miles & i had 55 to my destination :| )
Decent overall numbers for the performance on offer

Yep, pretty good really and inline with my mpg figures too. Half urban (London), sitting at 80 leptons cruise on the motorway, I get 28mpg.

Can't complain really. It can be useful to list other cars you have driven in the same conditions / usage pattern. Obviously there will be variances, but at least others have a few reference points.

I get 21mpg from a C63, 31mpg from an N52 330i, 31mpg from a E90 320i, 37mpg from a new Mini One 3 pot.

Good point , have done the same journey many times in wide range of vehicles from function to performance , below are close average numbers over the 1500 miles return
VW Touareg 2.5 Tdi auto 26mpg / Astravan 1.7CDTi 50mpg
Audi A6 Avant 2.0tdi auto 36mpg / Audi S4 (3.0 Supercharged ) 34mpg
330d E91 auto 37mpg / 911 996 manual 33mpg
X3 3.0 petrol auto 29mpg / 520d Msport touring 36mpg
Passat 1.8T 36mpg / TT V6 DSG 33mpg
guess looking at the above the ZM sitting around 29mpg average would be down with the worse but shortest time on the French leg :P
The 911 & the 3.2 V6 TT were surprisingly good tourers for comfort , performance & economy

ah yes, that was the fleet from the last 2 years - right?

Cheers. I got 25mpg from a 993C2 over a few years, only slightly worse than a 1.8 MX5 at 28mpg :)

Are you sure you got 34mpg not 24mpg from the S4? A friend has one and gets 24mpg which fits in with honestjohn realmpg submissions etc. He thought there was something wrong with it but no.

Is that the 4.2 S4 though ? This was a 59 plate so 3.0 Supercharged
We did Lancs / Baden Baden Germany / Charente France / Normandy France / home to Lancs :driving:
around 2500 & pretty sure the best we saw was 37mpg :? & average back home 34mpg & at times we were clogging it
Numbers tick in my mind as the performance is electric yet very similar to the A6 2,0tdi multitronic

No, the 3ltr supercharged jobbie!

Anyway, petrol is 103.6 here now, time to enjoy the 6.2ltr M156 beastie!
