If you share your planned route I can offer some advice on the great and perhaps the not so good roads :driving:

I'l make another post then maybe others who fancy a similar road jaunt can use some of the info themselves

300 mile range isn't so bad..

Try owning and E60 M5 !!
I tried both the e60 M5 and e92 M3 - didn't see above 20mpg for either.

At least my old e34 M5s had a 90l tank - meant I could do the Liverpool - London - Liverpool commute on one tank a week. Mind you, it was a £100+ fill up each time.

Best was 300 miles on a steady cruise via autoroute to Le Mans; we had to stop every 150 miles due to the supercharged atom in the group which had a dreadful fuel range.

In normal use I refuel at 250 miles and typically see 23mpg on the dash computer.

250 miles at a time is comfortable. Bear in mind petrol stations aren't that plentiful up here though. Perfect roads for an M though, I had a fantastic run up from Glasgow yesterday. August is a rubbish time to come, the roads are full of tourists and the midges are in full force!

That was similar to my X5 because that had a 93l tank and it cost a fortune to fill and didn't last long either because it was such a thirsty swine, range is about the only good thing about a diesel and you can squeeze around 650 miles from a tank in the 640d and the tank is only 67l.

The very end of August is ok, as the Scottish schools go back before the English ones. We had lovely clear roads on the Skye run last year.

Just done a European jaunt, got anywhere from 200 - 330 miles between refills. Mind you, the 200 mile one I was cruising at German speeds

This may sound gaga but did you think you got better mpg from euro fuel :? whenever i'm in France it appears to improve around 10% could be the roads are more flowing & less top start or gear changes :?

Autoroutes do seem to flow well on the whole and clipping along at 85 is perfectly possible for many miles. Any cost saving however is obliterated by toll charges :D

I've been eaten alive by the midgies and yes that was in early August, on a push bike. We are up in Liverpool 22nd, for a Birthday Party and Scotland is only up the road from there, so thought we might make a tour out of it. Nothing firmed up yet. When do the schools go back?

I used to have an E34 M5. I did 19,422 miles in it at an average 18.74mpg (calculated from actual petrol used, not from the car's computer). My best ever tank was 24.15mpg, and the most I ever put in at one fill was 83.13 litres.

In my current E39 M5, I've done 30,985 miles so far at an average 21.53mpg (calculated from actual petrol used, not from the car's computer). My best ever tank was 28.06mpg, and the most I ever put in at one fill was 71,54 litres.

In the Z4MR, I've done 3,996 miles so far at an average 22.05mpg (calculated from actual petrol used, not from the car's computer). My best ever tank was 25.69mpg, and the most I ever put in at one fill was 50.32 litres.

Honestly? I think some of you have bought the wrong car.

How so :? Many use their cars for multiple uses so therefore have expectations other than outright performance
I asked the question in relation to a certain trip i'm making in order to get a idea where/when to fuel as i don't expect a filling station in every Scottish village

I don't think the fuel in Europe helps per se, although I did feed her 102 and 100 octane where available.

However I have generally found my beemers seem to be happier cruising at 80 rather than 70 - possibly the roads being smoother makes a smaller difference too? Less friction? I don't know.

I certainly was never going to be getting record breaking economy on the autobahns, but like others have said the tolls in France are crippling.

Cheapest fuel on holiday was Austria, most expensive was Holland - a difference of nearly 50c a litre

The Scottish schools go back about 20th August. The best time of year up here is just now, the midges aren't out and the tourists are still in limited numbers :).
Midges are only really annoying early morning and evening, during the day they're OK, so long as it's not a still, damp day. Smidge repellant works pretty well.

If you get up early you can have the road pretty much to yourself almost any time of year, I have to drive from Ft Wm to Kyle of Lochalsh every Monday, I leave the house at 06.30 and have it pretty much all to myself the whole way there.

I just got back from York, having driven there and back from central London this weekend. Pretty much sitting behind other traffic all the way, but the zed averaged 31mpg on the way up, 30 back down. This is on 95 ron.

A little higher than I usually get, but always at least 250 miles per tank. Ignore the fuel light, at normal UK speeds you will still have at least 50 miles range left. I usually run it down to < 20 miles range on the trip computer.

Even when showing zero range for 10 miles, there was still a gallon left in there, if you believe the fuel tank size.

Que running out of fuel stories :D

27mpg on a London->Spain return roadtrip, including lots of motorway, and lots of mountain roads ;)

London to Scotland i actually got slightly more, but i didn't get to do 4 days of solid tour-de-france routes as per Pyrenees. Needless to say, once you depart Glasgow for Fort William, things only get better the further you go.
