total airbag system failure

Since I bought my car the passenger seat has to be buckled up to prevent the annoying seatbelt reminder chime. I thought it was due to the occupancy sensor malfunctioning but perhaps not.......

I switched seats for z4m sports seats but didn't change the occupancy sensors ( prefacelift car / post facelift seats) cos they appeared to connect quite nicely to the cars wiring system. My car is one of the strange inbetween period builds.....

Anyway I had to switch pretensioners from my se seats to the z4m ones and yet I still have to have the seatbelt fastened to prevent the chimes. Deduction - there's a possibility the pretensioner is faulty as the chiming persists and the wiring has been carried over. I just bought another off eBay to try and see if that rid the problem....

Does this make sense so far?

To add to this I expected the airbag warning light to come on the dash with the seat swap ( although I did disconnect the battery during the swap) . This did NOT happen. I was really happy but I looked in the manual a few days ago and it confirms there could still be an airbag problem if the warning light DOESN'T come on. Turning on the ignition the warning light doesn't come on!

Any comments about the above? could this be an indication of the airbag being deployed and not replaced? I don't want to take it to the dealer if I can avoid it. I do expect though that ill prob have to plug into a diagnosis unit. Don't wanna take the dash trim or door skin off either to see if the airbag is still there! Cheers.

I'm new on here, so not knowing you or your cars history so bear with me.

Reading between the lines, has your car been in an accident/ damaged repairable??/ for you suspect an airbag is missing? Only thing i defo know is ALL warning lights should light up (including airbag) when you switch on ignition then go out as the ECU checks systems.
Maybe the bulb has blown? OR someone removed the bulb after an accident (save replacing an airbag(s) & trip and cost going to the stealers to reset)??
Agree with you regarding the pretensioner fault, maybe due to an accident again??

perana, my car had been in accident prior to my ownership so now it has got my suspicions raised. had nt thought about the bulb out issue though, but prob far less likely than an actual problem. Will have to see how i go about checking the bulbs now........

Done it on a E46, but not an E85, but what i looked up....pish easy:

Disconnect battery
Fully lower and pull out fully steering column
Look up from under instrument cluster, remove one single screw on top edge
Remove cluster

Probably will involve either screws (possibly torx) or tabs to get inside cluster,,,,might be evident on back if someones been tampering with it.
Good luck with it.

Thanks. Will take a look next weekend when I get some free time with daylight. Much appreciated!

The light should illuminate before you start the car.

As for checking for the existence of a passenger airbag, you can remove the glovebox to see.

Liam it does nt light up at all. Thanks for tip on glove box. Might be simplest option so far.....

Obd reader would tell me more I'm sure. It's quite frustrating now not knowing what it is.
