Though just to be clear I don't think you were asking about removing the rev limiter (that would indeed be madness) it was the top speed limiter that one might remove.

I had three cracks at top speed on the autobahn last week, got 154, 153 and 155 with a GPS speedo. The actual speedo showed over 160 on all of them (didn't look for long).
You would need a very long track to get up to those speeds. I hit the limiter in 5th on the last attempt. Car gets nudged by the wind very easily at that speed, I don't think I ever thought "I wish I was doing 170!"

First two attempts were sixth gear, last was fifth. Wasn't really paying much attention to the wind as I was hardly on a Guinness attempt but the car certainly moved easily at those speeds.
