Top speed limiter

Does anyone know if the top speed limiter can be removed without having to do a full remap? Thinking of attending a vmax event this year!

mine is totally removed, but was part of a remap... so i see no reason why they couldnt leave the map stock but remove the limiter, they added all sorts of stuff during my remap, like sport button memory.

I expect it can be coded out with the right software? Find someone local with some computer wizardry and see what they say.

True.

5th gear only stops when you hit the rev limiter at 170-something on the speedo or 167mph on a TomTom.

If you pop it into 6th it will slow down until speedo shows about 160-something or 157mph on the TomTom.

Didn't realise 5th could take you to 167, how much more could you get from 6th - 175?

Without some extra power you might not see any higher speed.

Also remember that (depending on where you do the VMax event) you are very liky to run out of space long before you run out of revs.

I've done VMax at Bruntingthorpe a few times and never got near the advertised top speed - the last few (several/many) MPH take forever and the runway is just not long enough.

Test what? The unlimited top speed or the 5th gear top speed?

I've not got an unlimited car, but regularly vmax the car on the autobahn when we're on one of our Ring trips and find the Ring closed for whatever reason. Then we usually just get the map out and plan a jaunt to a town/city an hour or two away.

Those speeds I mentioned were from my own measurements.

I think someone on here posted a video of an autobahn vmax run.

That was in my 911, so speeds are not that representative of a Z4.

+1 This fit's with what I've managed twice. The car is running out of puff and very close to the rev limiter around 171 in 5th change to 6th before she blows a vein and trundle back down to 158 ish. I've never run into the rev limiter in 5th but I guess you would , with a tail wind, if you sat there for another 30 seconds. That can't be doing the engine to much good, so I,ve always changed up before then. :wink:

175 is doable in 6th with no limiter. The M-driver package raised (but did not remove) the limiter to 171mph. This was available on the Coupe only but I don't think BMW UK allowed buyers to select this option.

Apart from on the autobahn, where are you going to find a track with a long enough straight where the rev limiter will ever hold back your car's performance? Removing the limiter is pointless.
