Took my car in for a few warranty bits...

So, I took my car in for a few warranty bits (under AUC) and I asked them to evaluate the gearbox (1st to 2nd). Well, apparently it's not exactly as it should be and they are looking at replacing the gearbox under warranty.

I'm thinking this is a good thing (having a new gearbox)....so is there any reason why I shouldn't have it done? Also, TBF to Elms, the chap there (Ian, service manager) has been great so far, which hasn't always been my experience at any dealership.
 
Putting potential buyers in the future off the car? Would you even list that it has had a new gearbox?

If it were me looking at an advert and it read "new gearbox replaced under warranty" I'd do some digging, as my mind would feel unrest at what else is potentially wrong, is it a lemon, what if it goes again out of warranty etc...

Naturally, if you sold to a forum user, it might not be the case above, but giving you an opinion :)
 
Bite their hand off -total no brainer IMHO -for me it would be one less thing to worry about especially if the mileage is higher as a potential buyer- ie its a def selling point -when i bought my last jag what sold it to me was that it had a new engine done under warranty .

That's a very bizarre perspective you have on that??? So, an 8 year old car with a brand new gearbox installed by BMW main dealer is a bad thing? When it comes for sale in a few years time and it's competing with your/another car and it's 10 year old gearbox and 70k miles on it....pretty sure which car I'd feel more confident with! If in 3 months time they say I need a new engine I'd jump at the chance (f*ck it replace all the mechanical bits)...there's no voodoo lemon thing, they are just mechanical parts which wear out! Reality is lot of people who buy M cars can't really afford the running costs, so never get the bits replaced which really ought to be ("it's just a quirk of the gearbox mate, they all do it, blah, blah"). I'm lucky enough to have spent the money to buy an AUC and can afford all the bits to run the car properly.

I would imagine most owners on here would love to have a few parts replaced under AUC warranty if they had one on their car?

Yep, it's kind of my perspective on it too. I bought our TTRS because it had a new gearbox put in it 2 months earlier (so has a 2 year audi warranty on that).

For ref, the gearbox felt no different from the other 3 I drove prior to purchase, yes they are all pretty crap (I think it's the main weak point of the car), so it may be case that a brand new one feels almost exactly the same. Either way, it'll come with a 2 year warranty...and that's a good thing!

Anyone else had a new one put in relatively recently?
 
Be good to see if it's any different when you get it back..

What was the gear change like? The 1st -2nd change is notoriously notchy on the M...

Be prepared for the call saying " your clutch and duall mass need changing but they are not covered under AUC ".. :cry:

Gear change was often notchy 1st-2nd (similar to others I drove) but the rest of the gears were fine, no issues at all. If they need changing then so be it, it's just part of running a 50k mile 8 year old performance car.

It can't be as bad as the £2500 clutch change on my AMV8!
 
I'm with everyone else - get it done.

Out of interest, if you have your engine replaced with a brand new one, do they re-set the mileage to zero ? I guess mmm-five would know as I think he had his replaced.

Ask them to remove the CDV whilst there at it ( can of worms opened!!! )
 
Just be careful. They will charge you for the labour in "investigating the issue" so if they decide it doesn't warrant replacement you will pay their labour. Remember they are slippery buggers!

That's what I was told when mine needed a new engine. Still on the original 100,000 miles later :thumbsdown:
 
Again, TBF there is no charge from them at the moment (all under AUC warranty), which is nice, if a little surprising.....maybe they think they'll sell me one of those god awful i8 things if they keep me happy!

Wow, you're on the original clutch at how many miles? Surely it can't be 'right' and you are just accommodating the slur and slip?

The odometer keeps it's reading, although your service schedule resets.

I was 'lucky' that mine went just before an I1, so I just had the running in service a week later and then back to oil/i1/oil/i2.

I assume a new engine needs to be run in again, and the 1200 mile oil change completed.
