Probably in the wrong place?? Decided I probably won't use the car in December so SORN'd it on the 30th. They still took the direct debit. After calling and writing they tell me it will be repaid within ten days, (it's not back yet).
Question is, do I SORN and cancel DD at same time and if I were to SORN on the 25th of a month could the car be used until the end of that month because a full month has be paid for.

The day you SORN your car is with immediate effect. So SORN on the 25th and you lose the last 5/6 days.

I pay all up front and claim back 4 months when I SORN end October.

Use a 0% credit card if you need to, cheaper than the 5% the dvla charge.

you will get it paid back...best thing to do next time is cancel your direct debit earlier...say around the 20th, you'll still be covered to the end of the month, then sorn it on the 30/31st

Make sure all interactions with the DVLA are in writing. Last time I tried to claim back tax, they lost the paperwork and cost me £65.00.

Even though they had confirmed they were in receipt of my V5 verbally, they never confirmed it in writing. The complaints process is a joke too.

Easiest way is to do it online, you get a reference number immediately along with confirmation email.

I taxed it for 6 months as I only had to deliver the car to its new owner (50 miles) and the tax had expired one month before. I did not SORN it as the car was going at some point that month and it hadn't moved for 3 months in the garage.

For convenience I thought tax it for 6 months, get 5 back. (What could go wrong?) I taxed it on the 28th of the month and made them aware of the cancellation on the 31st. Rang a week later to confirm they got the V5 and all was well. Didn't hear anything for a couple of weeks and then started chasing the credit. What a mess, different answers over the phone and then eventually they admitted they had lost the V5. Instead of 1 months tax, they got me for 3 due to their error.

I went through the full complaints procedure on each occasion raising it to a higher level. The letters that came back didn't answer any questions that were raised in the previous letter and just stated their perspective on me not having written evidence. They record their calls and then stated that they only keep 90 days worth and eventually they stepped over that threshold and lost the recording too. :?

Never, ever again will I trust the DVLA with anything. Beyond useless..!!

When I sold my ///M to Cracker it was the back end of the month so I expected them to tack the following months payment and then I'd get it back when the V5 was processed. When they took another payment the next month I rang up to find out what was going on, they told me "it's your fault for not cancelling the direct debit".

It's never a painless experience when dealing with the DVLA. What make it worse is the couldn't give a toss attitude, I once had a guy hang up on me because I was trying to find out the route cause of an issue I had and he just didn't want to help. :headbang:

So far, me the OP have not been credited back. I told them that by taking money for a tax that I had cancelled (sorn'd) had caused me to go overdrawn and incur bank charges. They've told me to claim it back from my bank?

Update: Today (12th) I finally received my refund.

Question: Do I leave the direct debit in situ for re-taxing or do cancel and start over next time?

When I put mine on sorn I didn't cancel the DD. I just got an email and ref through saying car was on sorn.
Nothing more to do.
