Finally realized....
Yeah, the LED strip was about £4 from eBay. Extended the cable by about 6 inches and using an old LED bulb housing, pulled front off and threaded the cable through it, using the stripped copper wire to reform the bulb contacts, using a little superglue to hold it all in place. This way it just pushes into the light holder like any bulb, so can remove and go back to bulb should you want to.
I stuck the LED strip in the first groove in the roof tray so it's out of sight and lights the whole boot.

Nah, did it back in October time and my car lives indoors. Could do with being done again, but I need some more AG protectant and tbh it is a bit of a faff covering the windows and bodywork with plastic sheeting...
Today I have pulled out the centre vents to get at the radio, I needed to check that it wasn't a Becker unit (its a Siemens VDO 
) as I'm almost certainly going to order a Dension 300 & being able to get text display on the head unit was a deal breaker.
(PS, thanks to all the tips here I was able to get the centre vents out within a minute or 2 )
Also today the postman has delivered me from Sopers a ZHP gearknob & a new oil filler cap as mine weeps slightly, I'm going to be fitting these later this afternoon.
