To have or not to have

I am not knocking the z4m i have had BMW's For the last 15 Years 323 328 330ci e46M3 all been fantastic cars . Yes i have driven both the z4 coupe and the z4m . . compared to the 2006 porsche cayman S the cayman was better car as in looks desirability class handling you but them both side by side there is no comparison . . yes they can be expensive but just as expensive as a z4 the porsche is the most reliable german car . . deep down you know the porsche is a better car .

Sorry can't agree!

A test drive is a very small snap shot of the car. You actually need to live with the car to be able to give a fully rounded opinion of it.

having owned an Alpina Roadster, M3, Porsche 911 and now purchased a Z4MC i think i'm in a position to comment.

I wouldn't be rushing back to purchase another Porsche, although i really enjoyed my time with the 911.

how do you mean it looks like a soap bar ? The z4 bonnet is too long you turn the steering wheel and two seconds later the front end goes where you are pointing it .

 I totally agree with this!!! But hey we are all different in what we want and how we feel when we drive are cars :driving:

Cayman S is a lovely car and from some angles looks really good. Price-wise an S with reasonable miles and decent spec was at least £8k more when I was looking at the start of this year, more close to £10k to be honest.

I went for the Z4MC as I didn’t want to put another £10k on my budget, plus I wanted the looks, rarity and rawness of the Z4MC, and I’m still really happy that’s what I’ve got.

As for reliability between Cayman S/Z4M, I’ve no idea which is better, but neither cars seem bad. Average MPG is 24 now on the Z4MC, with a mix of London and motorway driving, which isn’t bad at all for the performance available!

Over on M3cutters it is believed a well-maintained S54 will go to around 250k, and there’s plenty of M3s on that forum with well over 100k on them.

Have to say I have a Z4M and my dad has a 997 Cs with everything including chrono pack, 19" Turbo wheels. Looks the balls.

Although there is nothing between them really until you get to about 135 and the Porsche starts to pull away. They are two different cars the Porsches are precise machines you point them and thats where they go, more so the mid engined porsches like the Cayman rather than the 911, but still. The Porsches put you into a false sense of security its not hard to drive them fast. Which is bad it makes bad drivers good, and this has been noted my most of the main car review mags and TV programs.

With the Z4M you have to grab it by the scruff of the neck, wrestle with the car. It has a lardy arse on it, so much more fun to drive in that respect. It depends on your preference, driving both and swapping with my dad we love both of the cars. But both are very different, rear engined, front engined, driving position in the BM you sit a lot further back the porsche has 4 seats.

The Z4M is more in the cayman s/boxster s category of competition rather than the 911. But the Z4M holds its own just a shame thay havent brought out a newer Z4M to compete with the Cayman R. A V8 Z would be amazing.

I have to say I prefer the Porsche simply because of its presence on the road, driving behind it, looks gorgeous. The noise, looks and pedegree is something everyone wants even if you wont admit it. At the time when I was buying my Z4M I wanted a Porka and my budget was 25k and what I wanted was a C4S looking at 996... not exactly the most desirable 911 model but the only car in my budget and good Cayman S with chrono pack a good spec and lower milage is over 25k from a Porsche dealer. The 996 C4S definitely the best all round looker and performance for money (in the 996 range) and great in the snow with winter tyres which is good round where I live, in the sticks. But for 25k I was looking at a 50k 52-53 plate with no warranty. Plus the problems with RMS, and most of these cars are small garage prized possessions... which is a bad thing you have no idea what has been done to them. Most needed work at this price and with no warranty it was a big risk these cars are money pits at the age unless you can get a good one which is expensive. There was a red 53 plate C4s at paragon for £30+ but it has no milage.

So went back to BMW got a much newer Z4M with all the spec under the sun got a 2 year warranty and a much newer car for 7k less!!! Made sense to me, meant I could spend some money on the Z to get it to how I wanted. Plus I love how rare it is, have only seen one other in the 3 months ive had mine. Seen as tho I have access to driving my dads Cs it was a sweet deal for me. Plus I have a lot of time to buy a Porsche because im pretty young. My dad was pretty pissed in the end tho as the Porsche is a year younger and cost twice the amount... and there really isnt a lot in it at all the Z4M is a very capable car! Those Top Gear lap times show this.

But like my dad said its what he wanted and he can afford it. So why not! His answer to me was GT3 next

I will get some pics up of the Porsche and the Z4M as soon as the weather gets better. The Porsche is bright red look incredible, really really love it lol! But I love my M too. In an ideal world have both!

Now your being silly. You have the right hand pedal to steer with. No need to wait for anything just press it, as you start to turn the steering wheel and the nose will turn in just as far, or as little as you command it too. :driving: That was pretty much what seemed to me to be missing from my brief drive in a CaymanS. (Fun)

Buzyg, is one of the Sevens in your signature yours? They definitely have a long bonnet, and are much more fun than a Cayman :poke:

ok we all agree the bmw more fun because it does not know how to handle like a porsche and all agreed that its is very rare . .. people getting struck down by jigtening is rare but it does not mean that we want it .

I wish, have tried several kit cars and baby lotus over the years and never found one I could actualy fit into and drive. That's the SW kit car club on a run out they had with the SWPH crowd a few months back. Great bunch.

Which dimension doesn't fit? I'm 6' and I've a Westfield which fits me easily

It's pretty hard to choose to be struck by lightning - though you'd be surprised how often it actually happens :D

I've read this thread from start to finish and it's great, if sometimes badly punctuated. Everyone's got an opinion, said their piece, and it's not gotten out of hand despite passionately held views. But that's the point - these cars are about passion, and how you personally feel when you get behind the wheel. I don't have an M, haven't ever owned or had to maintain or live with a performance sports car, but I have had a good bash in a 911 on a track day and didn't like it so much because it just felt too composed and safe, which seems a bit wrong to me for the kind of car it is. I just didn't get the tingle I get every time I sit in my Z. For me it's not an investment decision right now (60k on the clock and I will do 15k a year easy - I'm not fortunate enough to be able to run and house more than 2 cars, never mind sports cars for weekends), so holding it's value and desirability doesn't count for so much. It's ALL about fun for me, and owning a car that I have desired for a long time. When I come to change it, and if I can afford to trade up, I'll possibly have a poke around other cars and then probably end up with (by then) a very rare Z4M. Because I just want one. Which I think is my point, but as usual I have rambled away from myself

Just my tuppence-worth

 6ft 4 size 14 feet. & all the extra lenght is in my darn legs. Was handy on a push bike 30 years ago. But a pain trying to dive a kit car.

Best time to buy is around the last couple of days before they close their books... the extra couple of £ in their books might just mean hitting the big bonus numbers, so might offer u extra special deal...

Well, you shouldn't have eaten so much as a kid then!

Wow - that's a hell of a contrast in choices. I am not sure they even compare ? Without going into performance, fuel consumption, handling (none of which I can comment on with any authority), looks, practicality etc... every time I have seen one they sound lovely and brash, which is okay for 10 secs, but I think the noise would drive me up the wall. Had a Focus ST for three years, and accelerating was fun, but sustained levels of noise during ordinary driving got on my t1ts after a short while. And it was quiet compared to this... Perhaps I am just getting old :D

However, if you plonked one of these and a Z4 M Coupe (bleeeuurghhhh - wash my mouth out, hate saying coupe... :poke: ) in front of me, I'd rip the zed's keys out of your hand and you wouldn't see me for dust. Of course I'd then sell it and get a roadster instead

:D I love the sound of a v8, apart from the vxr8 the z4mc is in my heart. :)
