Tire rotation

Lockdown week 8 or 9 !? So bored I'm ready to rotate my tires. :rofl:
1st rotation of the Michelin Pilot 4s. Rears come straight up to the front staying on the same side. And the fronts go back to the opposite side.
Seems I need both fronts and one rear off at one time....

You got a square set up then?
I thought you had bigger tyres on the back?
 
Yeah, check you actually have a square setup first! Otherwise things could get interesting...

Thank you for that but yes, square as pie. I ordered them that way so I could get the longest useful life out of the expensive little bastards. :D
 
I couldn’t do this as my wheels are staggered. But does anyone in the UK still do this? I’ve never done it on the XF and understand Kwik Fit and some others don’t recommend it now. And does it make any difference?

Personally I’d avoid rotating for the same reason. The main reason to rotate is so that you get even wear across all four tyres. That means they all wear out and need to be replaced at the same time.
If you just leave them where they are, one pair will wear out before the other so you will only have to replace them in pairs.
Either way, the overall cost is exactly the same but by not rotating the expenditure is spread out more and easier to deal with.

Just my opinion.
 
I think its more important if one axle wears out considerably faster than the other... for example a powerful front wheel drive car, where the fronts do propulsion, steering and the majority of the braking, and the rears just hold the back of the car up.

In this case fronts might do only 10k, but rears could easily do 50k - without rotation the rears might be several years older than the fronts. In this case, when the fronts wear out, you should rotate the rears to the front, then fit new tyres to the rear.

I will be rotating to insure all 4 wear evenly to get the best performance possible. Somewhat interesting, the law here states that when 2 tires are bought for a car they must be mounted on the front.

If you really wanted to ensure 'the best possible performance' you'd be replacing all 4 at the same time - and you'd have a staggered set up :poke:

The Z4 does well enough on a square set of Michelin PS4
Our X5 35d has a staggered set. I dread the day it needs new rubber.

On the front? Don’t you have any corners there? The advice here is that new tyres should be fitted to the rear. The theory being that, if the front loses grip, you go forwards into a tree and all the crash protection should save you. If the rear loses grip you go backwards or sideways into the tree...
Of course, with a staggered setup, either advice is pointless b
 
Interesting - I suppose they are concerned with steering over traction... Seemed like a silly rule either way. Another law which proves we have too much government
 
IMO this isn't a regular an issue with most Z4's anyway. They don't generally see that much road time, so you'll be replacing rubber for the sake of performance / guidance, rather than the fact you're close to the wear indicators. I think the rule of thumb is like 5 years? Which should be adhered to more strictly on a performance car.
 
All irrelevant really, as by the time lockdown is over boredom will mean the tyres are all back to their starting positions :D
 
Depends on whether you're rotating the actual wheel for tyre wear, or just rotating the wheel to avoid flat spots!! :P
I take mine out to the petrol station to buy a few essentials and top up tyre pressures as well (I also over inflate mine slightly due to the infrequent use).
 
I used to rotate the track tyres on my e34 M5 when they started wearing down.

Unfortunately, do to having a staggered set-up, the handling with the 255 fronts and 225 rears was...lively...and very controllable drifting.
