Time to sell the Zed

For a great reason though - it would seem we have our first nipper on the way. Hugely exciting but clearly 2 seats are no longer going to cut it - I believe it's frowned upon to put the baby on the roof!

So I now have 6 months to figure out what to buy next, and I suspect the knowledgeable folks on this forum might have some helpful suggestions. Here's what I'm after:

1) Has to do all the load lugging stuff - my wife is already plotting some rather large looking buggy systems!
2) Ideally similar pace to the 35i
3) Safe and not known for reliability issues
4) 4 doors - I've been banned from slinky coupes!
5) £35k or less, with no more than 30,000 miles on it.
6) Ideally not too large - I don't like the idea of maneuvering and parking something barge like in central london

A few initial thought's I've had are:

BMW 335d Xdrive (potentially the touring version#0
Audi S4 Avant
Audi RSQ3 (not sure if this is much bigger than an A3 in practice - need to go see one I guess)

Is there anything obvious I should be adding to this list?

Golf R is a great place to be too

Congratulations on the baby
Commiserations on the Z4

I have a pal currently running a 430d Xdrive GT , we had a weekend away with the lady's before xmas & that car does the lot :driving:
Looks swish , drives great & pretty frugal  does look well in the blue i have to say

A4 is a bit old now. I'd consider it when they new one arrives. A6/s6 avant if I wanted to spend. Though I'm also framing a golf R.

Congrats.

I have a 19 month old and a new one due in 5 days. I'm keeping the z until just before my wife goes back to work next October :)

The golf, although a nice tool will be a bit on the small side !
Even one child and kit takes up loads and loads of room.

good shout - hadn't thought of that - they do look stunning - I think they're very new though, meaning virtually none around on the second hand market (those that are have only a handful of miles on so I'd be buying on the steepest bit of the depreciation curve which I try to avoid doing). Might be different in 6 months or so. I guess the 640d grande coupe can make a similar case for itself but think it might be a bit too long.

Congratulations, and you may have considered this/have a good reason for otherwise, but have you considered splitting your vehicle needs in two? ie one sensible baby wagon and one fun car?

My neighbour and good petrolhead mate recently did this - they have a Focus for general duties and he has a tidy 996 C4S for fun.

I really like these - look like a heap of fun for a good price. Mrs has ruled it out though - not enough boot space apparently! (We will only have one car as we don't need it for commuting etc so the one car really has to do it all!)

Congrats on the baby :)

I had a 330d LCI auto before my 35iS and have to say it was the best car at ticking all boxes I have had. Space, power (6 to 60 in the LCI) for a diesel and economy coupled with good build quality. 3 years and not so much of a squeak. I got it at 5K miles and sold at 23K. The engine is extremely refined and coupled to the auto was awesome.

As a result of the above the only car I would want to consider would be the 335d x drive. I can see it being everything my 330d was and more, especially in the power dept

Good luck with the hunting.

I've just looked at the330d m sport and it does look nice - it's got me thinking that it might be a good replacement for her ladyships A4 3.0 Tdi :D

No offence but how much stuff does she think you actually need to put in the boot? My sister has a 3 door polo and two kids and can get a double buggie in the boot and they did have an RX8 but swapped for a focus only because when they went away down South they needed to use my Mums estate to take all their luggage plus the buggie, travel cot etc but this all fits in the focus so they don't need to borrow it now.

Have you actually been to see any cars? If not I think you both might be surprised by how spacious the boots are on some hatchbacks. The Civic I had was massive and it was quite deceptive how big it was, put the seats down and I got a double matress in!

I do like your thinking that a 3 series touring sounds ideal, you never know that nearer the time you might find a 4GC for your budget or the other option could be the 3GT, that's another cracking car with loads of boot space, lots of space in the rear and as they've been out longer than the 4 they may possibly be easier to find as a larger engine model.

Seriously though, I have a 1-year old and we mainly use the Skoda Superb Break because you REALLY do need the space, especially in the beginning: buggy, foldable bed, LOADS of diapers, bottles, toys, baby seat, your own stuff if you're going on a holiday ... you'd be surprised how much stuff you need to take with you on a holiday. You can't compare it to an older kid which basically just needs the special seat.

Anyways, I'd go with the M5 station wagon

I can only recommend you drive one , with the 8 speed box , unbelievably good car , a mate of mine had one as courtesy car , it's as good a real world car as you'll buy , way better than my wife's a5 3.0 tdi

Although my daughter is in her early 30's I remember the packing of the car and the lack of space very well :D
In the very early days of her life she was strapped in a carry cot underneath the roll cage of my MGB for some short trips - a hanging offence now!

I actually wonder how my folks managed it, my mum had a mini with two kids one a baby and one a toddler and never had any issues with getting us about, taking us to my grandparents in Glasgow, just like my Dad had an XR3i and they would travel with both of us to Inverness from 15 miles east of Edinburgh. That's not a great journey today, never mind in 1986! With a 2 year old who hit the terrible twos bad I believe.

Oh and the pram, unlike bugaboo travel systems and such like you get these days was a Silver Cross Coach Built Pram, not exactly made to travel easily.

What does " we seem to be having our first nipper" ? mean.
