Time to sell the Zed

Ignore all these predictable and boring recommendations and treat your new family to a Maserati

Congratulations, and you may have considered this/have a good reason for otherwise, but have you considered splitting your vehicle needs in two? ie one sensible baby wagon and one fun car?

My neighbour and good petrolhead mate recently did this - they have a Focus for general duties and he has a tidy 996 C4S for fun.

It's definitely an idea and can see why a lot of folks would take this route, but preference is just to have one lot of costs, one lot of parking headache (off street parking is not likely for a while), one lot of maintenance / admin etc.

Also I can forsee a lot of our driving with kids being long journeys to visit family who are scattered all around the country (particularly parents who are getting on a bit now so harder for them to travel). I am keen to be in something reasonably nice for those long drives.

Golf R is a great place to be too

Congratulations on the baby
Commiserations on the Z4

I really like these - look like a heap of fun for a good price. Mrs has ruled it out though - not enough boot space apparently! (We will only have one car as we don't need it for commuting etc so the one car really has to do it all!)

No offence but how much stuff does she think you actually need to put in the boot? My sister has a 3 door polo and two kids and can get a double buggie in the boot and they did have an RX8 but swapped for a focus only because when they went away down South they needed to use my Mums estate to take all their luggage plus the buggie, travel cot etc but this all fits in the focus so they don't need to borrow it now.

Have you actually been to see any cars? If not I think you both might be surprised by how spacious the boots are on some hatchbacks. The Civic I had was massive and it was quite deceptive how big it was, put the seats down and I got a double matress in!

I do like your thinking that a 3 series touring sounds ideal, you never know that nearer the time you might find a 4GC for your budget or the other option could be the 3GT, that's another cracking car with loads of boot space, lots of space in the rear and as they've been out longer than the 4 they may possibly be easier to find as a larger engine model.

It's a fair challenge. The car will get a lot of use on longer trips up country - so there will be times where we really need to load up and it has to be able to deal with that. You're probably right that 90% of the time a largish hatchback would do the job. The golf R is actually quite compromised on boot space due to the 4WD system - much less room in there than a normal golf I believe.

RSQ3, the new facelift model is about to be launched so the original should be in your price bracket.

Go for a test drive in one :driving: :D

We've got 4 kids two dogs an old Zafira a motorbike 3 push bikes an a place we like to go for p & q that place be the z4 ! :D

Thanks for the head up - I haven't been to see any yet so am, at best(!), an arm chair expert, clearly no substitute for having a good look around, perhaps taking a buggy along with to see how it fits! I'm (so far) managing to dodge to temptation to equate kids to SUV which so many folks seem to do though!

This is what do. I have a 2 year old. I have the Z4 for my commuting etc. The rear facing child seat goes on the isofix on the passenger seat when I need it (easier to get the seat in with the roof down!).

Then the wife has a diesel Hyundai thingy for everything else.

I've just looked at the330d m sport and it does look nice - it's got me thinking that it might be a good replacement for her ladyships A4 3.0 Tdi :D
I can only recommend you drive one , with the 8 speed box , unbelievably good car , a mate of mine had one as courtesy car , it's as good a real world car as you'll buy , way better than my wife's a5 3.0 tdi

Thats good to hear. Ive posted a question under "other marques " to ask that very question.
She has talked of the A3 /S3 but I'm not convinced.

In case anyone on the forum is interested the car is now up for sale. It has been much loved by a fellow enthusiast -and will be sorely missed!

Cracking car for a cracking price. I'm sure it'll not take too long to sell. GLWTS

Having recently having a similar dilemma.. i settled with a TTS

But an S5 4 door was a close second.. doesnt look much worse than a 2 door version... and the 3.0T engine is a treat!
