Time to learn to change gear - new //M

Two butter knifes in V formation to pull the clips down with one hand, and then pull the vertical centre part with the other hand. Simples :D

Like the idea of the butter knives. Cannot seem to get a grip on the centre part, which could be my challenge.

If I were to use a leverage approach, should I be leveraging the top of the vent, or at one of the edges once I've applied the pressure to the clips?

I used a credit card to get the vent out, obviously after using a screw driver to push the levers down.

I tried a credit card but it wasn't strong enough, it was an old card thankfully and just buckled without the vent moving at all. So I used a wallpaper scraper and pulled the top section out enough so it was off the clip then stuck an object in the gap to stop it from snapping back into the clip, did the same on the other clip side, that made it a lot easier as when you're concentrating on leveraging the sides the screwdriver/knife can slip off the clips and then you're back to the drawing board there. I then used the scraper to lever from the sides.

Undo the braces connected to the bulkhead in the engine bay, get two new bolts and retighten to the correct torque. That solved the problem for me which I was sure was from the dash in the car.

So new bolts rather than tightening the existing ones? Cannot seem to find a reference to the correct torque, only comments on the torque for a horizontal strut brace.

I have trawled Realoem, but for the life of me cannot locate the correct area to find the strut, let alone the bolt itself!
41nm for the firewall braces - I had to dig it out when I fitted my Strong Strut set last weekend

Excellent - I am torquing too little then. Fingers crossed it is this, as finding the vent a right PITA.

Will try the torquing correctly tonight & hope that it solves it. Should I still have a rattle on my commute, then back to the vents

Should I bugger up my vent, how much are they to replace?

So, my approach on the vents:

1) use screwdriver to push clip down
2) use a card / scraper to leverage out the vent at the top, above the clip
3) put somehting there to stop it slipping back
4) repeat on the other side & then start to wiggle it out / leverage on the sides

Does that sound about correct?

PVR has a gold card not an ordinary plastic one :D

My braces creaked when they needed re-torquing and that was enough to stop the noise. If the problem comes back I'll try try new bolts instead

I'm sure it'll be Platinum dear boy... gold cards are sooooo 1980s

PVR is so 1980s :D
Besides, Black is the new Platinum, old chap, Platinum is soooo 1990s :P

Nuts were at the correct torque.

Will look an new bolts.

Tried the vents again, using the 2 knife method - far easier to get both clips down.

Had some movement, I think.

But then noticed I have made a small rub mark on the carbon leather at the edge where it goes into the vents - almost like I've somehow rubbed the texture & a couple of the leather 'scales' have lifted :headbang:

Thinking I might have to live with the rattle until I can get to a meet & someone with more skill and experience than myself can help out. Who's the closest to have achieved removal in the Berks area? Beer token await!

Though I had cured it, with a little GT85 spray on the join of the nave monitor.... no rattles for half my commute this morning. Then all of a sudden the joy and smugness evaproated & the noise returned.

Off to BMW this afternoon for new 'diagnosis' which I'm sure will be "yes, it rattles", then have them replacing the bolts I have asked them to do.

While it is there, will get them to remove the centre vent....I can then inspect / stick felt on bits at my leisure....am sure I can stick felt just as well as a technician

No bolts in stock, they undid & re-torqued them, but no change unfortunately. Will get some ordered.

They couldn't get the vents out as were very busy with month end - they did try, but it wasn't budging.

Will book it in properly for a couple of hours & get them to remove & fix any rattles / relocate cables etc.

Grrrrrrr!

So the benefit of buying a 77k car is any squeeks & rattles have long been rectified by irate owners
Hope you get the niggles sorted & don't let it eat away at the pleasure of ownership

Correct!

Took me a year to get all the coupe rattles resolved last time.

1 week in, I'm just at the start of my journey. Normally do it all myself, but those damned vents are not budging!

Got a slight one from above the rear cubby too.

Loved every drive though, even gently along the motorway is just enjoyable, the slight pressure on the accelerator and hearing the noise increase just slightly & knowing there is so much more on tap. Off to the West Country for the weekend, so some old roads I grew up driving - can't wait!

Posted it in the wrong thread!

100% in the middle of the dash, tried this morning to remove the vents but I can see this being a long, frustrating task to remove them - despite reading up on how easy it is!

Alas the new bolts did nothing, so believe it is in the dash.
