Time for a Change?? Z4MC to M4? DCT or Manual?

I think this describes what I'm looking for. I want a car that makes me want to go out and drive, for no good reason, just to drive.
The Z4 does that for me now, not sure a DCT box would. I love the look of the M6 and if I'm ever in position to had an M6 as a daily and could also afford & have space for a toy then I'd happily do that.
At the moment the M4 would have to double up as practical daily and toy.
If I was in your shoes Steven I'd be choosing a manual too. I drove the M3 DCT and have previously driven a DCT-equipped Z435i. Perhaps it's just my driving style, but I find it almost impossible to drive them smoothly.

I haven't driven the manual - but it's an interesting idea. I'm confident i'd not consider the manual M4, personally, but i get why.. especially going out driving for drivings sake, it's an activity, and taking away half of the interaction makes that less.. active. Maybe i'll go test one after all. Be interested to get an extended drive in a PDK 991 and see, as pvr says, if it's any better (they are meant to be the best real world usable boxes outside of an Ferrari F1 style one afaik)
I'm honestly pretty tempted by a V8 Vantage S at the moment, even maybe with the auto box that involves a bit of skill to drive smoothly/quickly. Power to weight increase over the Z4 is just enough to make it noticeable (like the M4 is), and another sense of occasion.

At the end of the day with all of these things it's individual preference. Like OG I couldn't drive the DCT smoothly, full bore manual gear changes (2-3 and 3-4) (on a very dry road) resulted in a spinning up of the tyres and a cut of power as the DSC kicked in which was very frustrating (and hence why I think I'd struggle to modulate the torque delivery given the style of driving I enjoy).
Leaving it in 'auto' and letting the car decide the optimum time to change certainly prevents this, but with torque available from so low down in the rev range changes are quite early and speed builds up quickly, but with no real drama, it doesn't feel animalistic.
That is the same for me and pretty much any car with only two pedals whether its DCT or slush isn't something that I would get excited about driving for a weekend blast, I appreciate they are very quick shifting and good in a daily environment but they just don't float my boat.StevenH72 said:pvr said:Amen …

I hired a transit van over the weekend and because I am only used to two pedal cars now driving the manual in that made me realise just how boring a two pedal car is to drive and has made me hanker after a proper three pedal manual again even more, I have driven a DCT V8 M3 a few times and owned a twin clutch Audi TTS yet I still don't really understand the love for these types of gearboxes unless you are commuting then obviously its a lot easier on the left leg.

Didn't see it mentioned but what are the projected figures for depreciation on this car. New BMWs, especially M cars s**t money. From what I can see and the previous M3 you will do your ZM value in the first 12-18 months. Mental :!:

But a lot less likely than a second hand car that has been everywhere and may have had make-do-for-sale type repairs to plaster over issues.
I have bought a few second hand cars in my time and most have had the "what happened there" type questions which takes my enjoyment away.

As long as there are 'rich' people buying new cars for me to buy at 1/3 of the original price a couple of years down the line then I am happy.

A couple of years? You'd get a huge discount 2 minutes later, then again at about 6 months (and not have to run it in yourself, or wait for build)
New is fine if the finances stack up, cost of ownership over a few years vs one a few months old over teh same period.Jess said:

Might be but,.... It is also a brand new to the market (rare) Hyper Hot Hatch that sounds awesome and goes round corners great in the wet with 4 doors and also is quite easy to park. Did I mention the sound ? :evil:

You knowIt is £15k cheaper than a new M3/4, right ?, which is the car that I think OP wants to buy. Each to their own, I guess. I would not dismiss it however.. I am not 19 and it appeals to me, it will be easier to park than a bigger BMW coupe in my crowded London Street
Personally for 40k I would try to buy a used Gen 2 997s
