Thoughts on used F-type coupe purchase?

Hi guys

Just wondered what people would think of purchasing
a second hand F-type coupe, 340ps. Prices seem to be heading close to £30k for a four year old one with relatively low miles. To me it seems like a lot of car for the money also considering it would be a main dealer car with a two year warranty.

I know it’s not the “S” which is probably the one to get, but that’s at least another £5k and will definitely be out of my range. Would the standard F-type still feel special enough to drive, without having an LSD and most likely without adaptive dampers to go along with what I think are totally stunning looks?

Other cars I am looking at are the 140 and 240 but they would be new. Also at a similar price bracket but not so much on my radar is the Cayman 981 2.7, again 4 years old. Whilst I’m sure the cCayman could run rings around the F-type in the right hands, I don’t think it would be as good an everyday car like the F-type, it’s also slower with less power and I don’t think it sounds as good.

I know the 140 and 240 are very different cars to the F-type and even faster still, but the of F-type coupe, even in 340 guise is pulling me in like a moth to a fluorescent light.

So, would I be absolutely mad to? What would be the downsides to the F-type? How much could an F-type go down in value? Could a £33k F-type depreciate as much as a 140 at the same price over three or four years? It’s going to be financed so I know all my questions will have many variables.

I’m comparing apples with oranges but what else is there to compare with the F-type for the money?

Cheers!

I don't think I would be spending that kind of money of the least desirable F Type. They are heavy cars and the 335 Hp is not that quick. Prices are still moving downwards at a reasonable rate.

I plan to have one at some point but not at present prices. For 30k, I would go for a slightly older car with low miles.

I share the same reservations as you. I do also wonder how much the F-type can depreciate, but I don’t think it will be a sub 20k car in the next 2 years or even the next 3 or 4 to be honest unlesss you are talking high miles. It may be worth hanging on for the F-type S to enter my price range though. But by then . It may be too old to finance on PCP.

Biased of course but I’d dive in and get one and this will never sit well on a partisan BMW forum.
You state the S is better and for sure as it has the LSD and more power. You can however remap to well over 400 as it’s identifal engine to the S bit a controlled map. 450 if you add overdrive supercharger pulley, 380 hp S is 4.8 and 170+ mph.
Looks beyond question. Fit and finish are good.
Prices won’t drop below £30k anytime soon and indeed have increased im the last month or so for older models.cheapest on Autocar way above £30k expect one with 90k and a cat D

I would advocate active exhaust which you will regret if not
Test one and see what you think

You could go Mustang or 370Z Nismo for similar money.
Both good calls, but the Mustang is just too juicy on the fuel and the interior isn’t great. For that money you could get a nearly new Nismo, but then I would be thinking is it worth spending an extra 10k over an older one which wasn’t nismo. Neither car gets close to the Jag in looks to my eyes either.

Isn't that also used M2/M3/M4 money?
M3 and M4 yes, M2 still a bit more but maybe with a higher residual it may work out similar in cost to finance on PCP. Definitely worth a look

Absolutely, I don’t think the S will drop below 30k any time soon. So are you saying 30k for a low mileage 340 f type from a main dealer could be a shrewd buy?

If you can find one at those levels at main dealer buy it.
There are good aftermarket warranties from dealers too that cover the essentials
Cars are strong too, but avoid poverty spec. Look for sports seats,
Personally I’d put the extra £5k on you card and get an S with big brakes, LSD, 20” rims, sports seats and active exhaust.

That would be my ideal car!! There’s a 340 up for 33k on 30k miles at a main dealer. I have no idea what Jag dealers are like to haggle with. Yes I’d like an S with the performance seats and a few other choice options but realistically it’s out of my range price wise.
I’d be happy with 19in wheels and performance seats on a 340, anything else would be a bonus.

£33k is a good price
Pm me details if you want and I’ll comment , or post in open forum
You’ll get nothing at a main agent and they sell quickly. I’ve just been haggling on both Epace (delivery in 3 weeks) and currently an Evoque and they won’t budge an inch on either ( former too new, latter dealer policy). They play with services, trade ins etc.
Try a specialist as they steal these cars before they reach dealers and you can get a Jaguar extended warranty often transferred from previous owner, or buy

Yep. The Jag is a beautiful looking car but I couldn't chose one over a 981 Cayman, all be it a higher price range. Depends on what you want from a car. I want something nimble and capable in the twisties. If you want something more comfy and weight isn't an issue, then you can go F-type, V8 Vantage (not sure if they are £30k these days), E89 Z4, R35 GTR. It sounds to me like you are going F-Type, one way or the other.

Does it have to be manual or auto? Does it have to RWD or with 4WD be an option?

H.

IMO id only consider an S as the base one to consider.

I would want the LSD and Sport Exhaust which come as standard, I would ideally also want the sports bucket seats too.

Plenty of cars about, I would save your cash and wait for prices to drop a bit more and then pick up an S :)

I left my Z4MC for an F-type R. RWD. A monster but the build quality was crap and the jaguar service is shocking and v.expensive. I paid £65k for it sold it after a year for £55k. I see similar models are going now for as little as £45k. This Car New was £95k. You could argue you get a lot for your money (now) but I don’t think I would revisit this.
All this in the context of my old YE57 DXE being up for sale with Sytner for £29k!!! They’ve just bought it from the guy I sold it to for £21k, he put 10000 miles on it and sold some expensive wheels and an eisenmann race exhaust that I gave him and I only paid £18k 4 years ago when it had only done 26000 miles.
Is the world going mad - are there really some loonatics that are paying this sort of money, or is everyone over-inflating their prices to try and create an illusion of a “modern classic”.

Lovely car but needs to be the S version, with the active exhaust. On a purely practical note the boot is absolutely tiny and not a lot of storage in the car.

Op is looking at the coupe which has decent capacity. The roadster sure does have a tiny boot..

At my price range it would be RWD, Manuals are like hens teeth so I’d imagine it will be auto . Vantage is a beautiful car but I would image astronomical to run, the G-TR I’m sure is the same and too fast for me. Yes it’s always horses for courses, as it’s going to be my only car, as much as I love the Cayman, I think the F-type is more suited to what I want it for. I think the Cayman is more of a second car. Unfortunately I don’t have that luxury.
