Thoughts on coated shell bearings?

Cool, thanks!

It's an old post but anyway, I was mearly pointing out that for as many end bearing stories there are I've seen far more threads on other forums with cars going well over 100k miles with no issues as well as opinions from garages that work on these cars day in day out. I was simply balancing the argument that appeared to be (and still appears to be for some) anyone over 60 odd k miles is sitting on a ticking time bomb which I don't believe is the case at all.
I can't explain you and your 5 friends having issues no more than you can probably explain why a sample of 5 other owners will have gone over 100k with no issues, luck of the draw? Who knows!
At the end of the day it's up to the owner to do their research and decide what's best for them, simples!

Correct...!

I had mind done at 105k km. The car has not seen a track during the first 75k of its live, before I put 20k spirited driving and 10k track km on the clock.

The bearings were shot. Copper peeking through - which is a sign of heavy wear.

Nobody can tell if copper peaking through is increasing the risk of damage with 10, 100 or 1000% but it looks like general consensus is that there is an increased risk when the bearings are worn to this level. Of all S54 engines I've seen, all of them had such damage to the bearings at > 100k km.

I was in the "no worries" camp as well before I got mine changed, but now moved to the "let's replace them - if it was not needed it would at least not cause any harm". Oil change twice per official interval (every 15k km), rod bearings and oil pump every 100k km.
