This question may cause some debate.....

When I shopped for my Z4, I had decided that the MT was mandatory. I test drove the auto in a 30i, and a 35i with the MT, which was really great.
I searched locally to test drive the DCT, but these cars are few and far between, and I never had the chance to try it.

Ultimately, I found a great deal on my 35is and of course, the DCT is the only gear box option, so the time it took to ship my car across the country, there was a time to get anxious about what it will be like...would I regret not having the MT I initially insisted on?
I guess I just allowed myself to put my trust in BMW that they wouldn't insist on the DCT in the top of the line Z4 if it sucked...right?
At least it got me to get some sleep while I waited!

Now, having spent the summer getting acquainted with this car I can tell you that the DCT is not something that comes natural right away. At first, I would select certain roads to experiment with the paddles and the sport mode. Twisty, narrow, tree lined roads where you're upshifting and d'shifting rapidly becomes addicting. Upshifting hard through the gears with the paddles is a flick of the fingers and gives you a very solid grip on the wheel rather than shifting with one hand, griping the wheel with the other, while the 35is releases the Kracken!

You have to get beyond the physical elements that the MT presents the driver to appreciate the DCT, but once you spend the time figuring out the DCT it brings a lot of versatility to driving the Z4.
I commute with this car and I appreciate the option to let the DCT decide the gear in Boston traffic, rather than work the clutch.

As others have said, in the end you gotta go with what works for you.
Hopefully you will have the opportunity to get introduced to the DCT, but again, people who haven't spent considerable time with a DCT may steer you away.
I really like mine.

Thank you for the excellent feedback I will let you know how I get on.

Something to consider....eh? £13K off the list of the 35i and 35iS

That is a heck of a discount but when you bring it up to the same spec as the one I am looking at it will cost me an arm, a leg and both of Ian's kidneys

Arms, legs are fine but both kidneys may cause some health issues..... :?

Good luck with your search today.

Here's a question for the manual gearbox users:-

In sixth gear, at what speed would drop a gear to achieve max acceleration?
(Looking at Autobahn speeds here)

Ie doing 100mph would you drop a gear or two or not?

Anybody ?

I know what happens with an auto box.

Top speed is adchieved in fifth on a z so would drop a gear to fifth.

But if max is required, drop to 4th

In an auto that would just happen but there aren't many who would drop a gear in a manual I guess!

Depends on the torque. In Germany in the M I rarely went out of 6th (or 7th in the Porsche) as there was no need for it.

Well I proudly have a sexy white beast sitting on my drive, and she is sooooo much fun. In fact so much so I am going back out in her now. Thank all for your comments, I think the DCT and I are going to get on fine. I can't believe the low down torque the car has, and how fast it is. One word Amazing

Not sure if you have yet but if you haven't - just wait to you get her in Sport+

It was so nice to hear a howl when it drops down the box at speed - I agree there's no real need but it sounds  unfortunately it's only once or twice a year when I'm able to use the car properly.

I think max rpm in third gear would see a heavy fine in the uk!
