This boot net Thingy?

What is this and how is it supposed to work?

It looks like it’s supposed to be attached somewhere but I can’t figure it out or even see what purpose it serves.

Thanks in advance.

It’s been pulled away / detached from the rear boot bulkhead..those 4 holes should have 4 push plastic rivers holding it to the rear bulkhead

They didn't all come with it.
Our old 2010 23i didn't have it but our 2014 35i does.
Maybe it was introduced with the lci models.

Ah! Thank you so much!

I’ll if I’ve some plastic push rivets that fit.

I think I’m probably being a bit thick here but….. :)

So, I checked and there are actually 4 plastic push rivets in place. So, I took them out and offered up the black plastic part of the net thingy….and it doesn’t seem to fit that way???? :?

It sits too proud of the bulkhead wall to be able to put those rivets in. Is there supposed to be another part of it? It seems that way somehow? :?

TIA

I suspect that that boot cargo partition (the movable panel that the net is attached to) has been changed at some point, and that your car never came with it..... OR the bulkhead panel has been changed.
I've attached a photo of the correct panel that should be fitted. It's a bit dark, but you can just make out the elongated holes.
I've attached another which is a lot lighter, but this one is for cars that have the communication modules fitted (Bluetooth and/or amplifier)

Ah yes…..my carpeted bulkhead cover doesn’t have any recess to accommodate the black plastic part of the net. Weird?

I know the previous woman I bought the car from, who had owned it from very low mileage, had just had an expensive roof service done by some place that specialises.

The only other thing I can think of is that maybe my car didn’t come with one and the owner prior to her (she didn’t strike me as the car modifying type!), tried to retrofit one, got the net but then realised they needed to change more than they thought and never completed it?

I would probably need to find a recessed cover like that?

(As an aside, I note you’re in Lincolnshire? Me too….just under 10 miles south of Lincoln)

Here's one, although it is for the version that has the comms modules behind it...

It's correct, that this part with the mesh is a newer replaced one due to broken hinges.
Up to mid of 2012 the elder partitions were mounted into the trunks. It got changed with the introduction of the new function to open the roof while driving.

Look at the upside. You can now use it a proper cargo net. Your bottles will stay in place neatly.

Thank you. I guessed something must have been changed.

However I guess when it was done they couldn’t mount the net properly without also changing the bulkhead cover to the different shaped one to accommodate the black plastic bar and mechanism for the net. So, they just didn’t do it!

Having now successfully installed myself….see below in next post…I can understand why!

Well, WHAT A PALAVA! :headbang:

However, I figured out a way to successfully install the net mechanism:

- without changing the existing bulkhead lining and buying one of the alternative contour ones.
- without even removing the bulkhead lining
- at a cost of £0.00

After marking out the required areas with a Sharpie and cutting them out with a craft and Stanley knife, I was able to replicate the pattern of holes on the later version bulkhead covers.

This allows the mechanism to sit flush with the bulkhead cover.

I then discovered that the 4 plastic push rivets used to hold the bulkhead cover on are totally inadequate to hold the net bar/mechanism because when opened it is under quite a bit of sprung tension! There is no way the existing push rivets could hold that at all. They MUST use something different or different rivets.

However, with much head-scratching and searching and fiddling and faffing, I was able to solidly secure it with nuts and bolts!

Very secure and works perfectly now!

Thanks all! :) :)

Correct.
The pins of the "newer" covers are indeed different, maybe longer.
