Thinking about selling....and going for a supercar.

Why doesn't everyone just whip their knobs out and start comparing eh? Head over to Tyresmoke or Pistonheads and you will find hundreds.

'Afford' however is a very, very flexible notion...it depends on your financial outlook / adversity to risk. Everyone is different.

That's why one of the richest men I know drives an F reg Volvo 440...

Only trying to help the OP  I see you have edited your post after reading mine properly

That's cool, I'll put it back then as I can read just fine thanks.... :D

You don't need £100k deposit for a 'super car'....10-15% is the norm, many would consider too much capital to be tied up in the car if you put down more than that, capital which could be used to generate cash (enough to pay the finance on a vehicle with some left over). However some do put down large deposits to reduce the monthly payment and / or reduce the risk of negative equity, and others pay cash to get it out of the way...depends on your personal attitude to your finances. Thus 'afford' means different things to different people.

At the end of the day OP you only live once, buy it if you want it....I once met a guy in his 60s who had done nothing but save all his life; retired, bought a BSA motorbike, spent months restoring it and then had a stroke so he couldn't ride it. He told me he regrets not just going for it when he could...makes you think

I didn't say you needed £100k for a deposit on a car, I said the OP should have £100k NOW on 'DEPOSIT' ie in the bank, before he cashes in his investment :)

Yeh but instead of a lambo i got a 2.0...
similar performance but wont kill me :D

Im clearly in the wrong job!

Surely an Aston should be on your list of considerations?

tbh why not look into a lease.. you get to drive/own the super car but dont have to worry about the depreciation or the bills...

i know 90% of our R8s are done this way... why have 100k plus tied up in a car

personally id be looking into this route

Yep, I guess most owners go this route. If I had the cash I wouldn't tie it up in a depreciating asset doing no work, it'd be doing work to pay for the depreciation in the first place!

Supercar club would be good for a year, see what, if anything, floats your boat from the supercar selection, then buy if you feel you want to :D

Well you guys ain't shite... I saved for 1 year hardcore for my Z4...And it's the max i could affford.. So :P

Really i should do stuff on HP.. even tho i consider myself money minded i hate the idea of not "owning" my stuff..My CBR600RR cash owned payed £3500? My car 9-10k worth (now :( ) Cash owned..Sadly i go silly on the mods and just carry on spending...

I spent over a £1400 on mods on my bike... And almost £2000 on Mods my car in 6 months :(

doh!.. really i should just save it,there was nothing really wrong with them in the first place. But then again I don't smoke..i don't really drink. So why not?

Anyhows .. Hot much money we talking dude? If you've got a few propeties to your name and over 500k in cash then whats 50k on a car?But if you've just run into 50-100k now..and still pay a mortage on your house then i dunno..I probs go max 25k cash on a car.Me personally..But i don't know your situation.I live at home still and have no bills besides my car/bike/insurance/phone/girlfriend etc etc so my prorites alot differnt from yours.

I'm not sure whether it's age influencing some of these repsonses  but seriously... we're on a forum talking about ownership of a pretty frivolous motor anyway, I doubt whether anybody could say their Z4 was an investment or the best use of their money regardless of the sq footage of their house.

In my most humble of opinions, life is too short - you take calculated risks (the heavy, hunch-backed investment in the first place indicates the author of this thread was happy to not play it safe) and you reap the rewards. Or not. It's better to regret something you've done than something you haven't.

I suspect anybody advocating the safe option is either too scared to go for it themselves or not quite as comfortable as they'd like people to think they were.

Just a thought... :)

REAL expensive route though. Many have gone bust. You tend to get a complex points based system which in reality gives you a Lotus Elise for a week, a Gallardo for a weekend and 4 days in a 599, then you have run out....all for £15k. You certainly wouldn't be able to have a car 24/7 throughout the year (of any kind) for less than £40k-£50k...much better, if you have the cash to speculate on new models perhaps? Perhaps order a 458 Italia immediately. Demand will outstrip supply; order it, drive it for 3 months, sell....buy the next one (new Merc SLS maybe?).

Another economical way to drive a super car (and by 'super car' I assume we are talking Lambo SV, Ferrari 599, etc....£150k+, not a used 911) is the 'rental' route. At weekends, it goes to the experience day people. I'm sure we will all automatically cry NOOOOOO, but think about it....

A) If you go to one of these days, very few people 'drive' it...they are terrified. 40MPH waving to their families is much more likely, and even if they do drive it properly, they get 15 minutes, tops. Your car is not going to get ruined doing it.

B) They service it, replace tyres, pick it up and bring it back, and it's fully insured. They prefer flappy paddle cars (clutch lasts longer, feels more 'magical' for the punters) and they pay you for the privilege.

One guy I was speaking to did this with an LP640. He bought it with enough money for three finance payments, then he planned to sell, but this came up and he found a way to keep it. The £2.5k finance payment was covered by rental fees, it only got used 2 weekends a month - the rest of the time it's all his. It's a cheap way to own a car like that....

The points based system works ok at most clubs. E25 are pretty damn good all considered for the price you pay. No worry on insurance, no worry on residuals, no worry on consumeables, servicing, breakdowns... just fuel and a fee to be a member.

If I had the ability to have a £150,000 car by any means, I'd want to be really sure it was the right one, and a supercar club would allow you to really find out which was right for you.

If I won a million pounds tomorrow I'd be a member for a year, pay up front, use all my credits on the mid/top end cars and make up my mind that way. Going to car dealers won't get you the kind of test drives you need on these kinds of cars to make up your mind imo!

All that said, if you are willing to speculate on cars like the 458 and so on, even if you don't like them, that is a good idea, but isn't risk free by any means... I've known people do this and in one case ended up with a load of 'new' Beetles (when they were 'new' ) that they couldn't shift for shite hehe... and it happens with higher end stuff too! (though chances are you won't buy 10 of them, but you might get stung 10x as much on 1 bad purchase)

Wish I actually had the money to make these decisions haha!

I was thinking of Ecurie too, just had a look and they have definitely improved their scheme....but it's still a lot of money. I played with the configuration and got about 20 days usage of e0 level cars (599, DBS, LP560-4, etc) for £11,000. I guess that is one weekend a month in something spectacular though!

Funny you should say that, Beetle convertible right? I also know someone

Just go for it, life's too short, but don't buy new, and of course pass the Zed onto the missus..... :)

Delboy :)

i used to live in the same village as a guy who had a gallardo when they first arrived on the roads, then upgraded to a gallardo spyder when they came out, loved the car but looked stupid outside the 120k barratt house he owned.

i think i would have other things in place like other people have suggested, like a decent crib which you are far less likely to lose money on, then a decent car.

what sort of car / value are we talking here anyway? used 911,R8 or higher such as a gallardo, f430?. obvious i know, but buying a supercar and running it are two very different things.

does sound exciting though !
