Think my amp is bu@@ered!

Saw your other post, I don't think I'd be 100% about putting a facelift amp into a pre-facelift car. The top hifi system was definitely changed between the two, something about analogue and digital inputs?? Don't know but I don't think it would be a straight swap.

This wasn't a facelift change, it was done before then. The amps changed from digital to analogue from memory. The first amps had optical leads.

Mine has a non-optical feed from the CD changer..

I was wondering why mine looked a bit weird.
Been on my to-do list to rip it out and give it a refresh.
Seems a bit of a backward step going from digital to analogue..?

Give these guys a call, they will fix it for you as long as it isn't water damaged. :D

BMW want nearly £1000 for a new one and finding a used one is hard!

They will also future proof it a bit too by upgrading some of the weak components :)

Ok,

So replacement amp finally arrived this morning, bloody couriers!

Identical part no, and s/w & h/w versions, which is good!

Put it in, and still the bloody same...

Hmm..

Symptoms are;

RH channel lower than left, and nothing from RH tweeter (may be blown, but doubt it)

Once the vol is cranked up, I get dropout from the LH channel, and the bass, which used to be bloody superb, is severely lacking.

It's the same on all sources, radio, slot CD and CD changer, and also on Bluetooth music via the Parrot. The Parrot uses the DSP amp, as it feeds into the line level outputs from the HU, and as the HU controls the volume whilst playing through Bluetooth, I assume the signal passes through the HU before being output at line level to the amp.. Looking like it could be a HU problem...

Thoughts.... [ref]Chris_D[/ref]???

At least I now have a spare (like rocking horse sh1t) amp AND a full set of the 10 speakers :)

have you tried a replacement head unit? sometimes can be the simplest things you overlook

Just browsing the for sale section now.. They are also on Ebay from £30.. Typical, but I'll always get my money back on the amp etc as they can only get rarer!

Mike

sorry just noticed you had mentioned the head unit...mine is out of the car at the minute due to having the dash hydro dipped..if you are about the north wales area you are welcome to try it..it is a dsp unit like yours

Typical again lol - Was only in Holwell on Sunday, at my Mum's. Whereabouts are you?

Mike

Try a different HU and see if u get same?
If u get the same result, try swapping a new speaker in.
If it's not speakers then i'd be lookin at cables - there's resistance in cables.

Still a really perfect opportunity to swap in some new caps to one of the amps imo and u can also do an A-B listening test to compare seein as u'v got two identical working amps.

I'll probably recap my own, and refit it, once I find the problem! These amps are more expensive than the roadster side covers! There's only one on Ebay and it's over £330
