The Zed is dead

No one has asked for first dibs on parts :tumbleweed: Guy on Cutters has asked who was involved as he saw the aftermath. Glad all 👌

Just seen that post on cutters.

Car is being held in High Wycombe. Would rather that wonderful S54 ends up in an enthusiasts car and not a drift s**g! The funny thing was that I'd just replaced the xenon bulb in the drivers headlight and it still didn't work, so needed a new igniter. That light came out unscathed but the perfect light was destroyed

Scary stuff! Push the insurance, make sure they pay for another like for like vehicle (they have to do that) and get back in the market for another MR..!

Glad everyone walked away from it

Am going to make sure I have 3 solid ads for like-for-like to prove valuation. Insurance company will no doubt try and pay a lower value as they always do.

Im sorry to see this pal but I hope you are okay. Although the loss of the car is gutting the main thing is that you are all good and there will be another motor out there for you...

Bu99er

As others have said at least you walked away from it .... and for us E85 and MR owners you just have to be reassured about the level of protection the car offers - I assume the top was down when when it happened

Glad to hear you're safe and well, so sad to see pics of what is an undoubtedly well looked after and pampered Zed, a tough little car indeed !

I read somewhere years ago that a Zed 3 used in one of the Bond films had to have the chassis weakened as the stunt driver couldn't get the car to break up during one of the scenes !

First of all, the important bit is that you are okay...but keep a track on how your aches & pains develop over the next few weeks and make sure you record any time you have to have off for physio/medical appointments.

Obviously some are better than others.

When I had my little spin on the motorway, the insurer was quite accurate as to the proposed payout (market was about £10k and they initially offered £9.5k + £4.5k for the mods) and was calculated by the insurer across 3 trade books (CAP, Glasses & 1 other I can't remember).

Unfortunately the next cheapest, standard car available was £3k more at the time with 30,000 less miles on, so not easy to compare had I argued the valuation.

Ultimately mine was repaired, but total cost was about £11k+ VAT (once they factored in the £3k diff change, and £2k of rear trailing arms) - and mine mostly only affected one side of the car.

Mine looked a lot less severe than your's though, so I can only imaging what their estimate for your's would be - I doubt they'll even bother getting it assessed.

Although in my belated experience, if it's close to being written off, then I'd let them do it, as the quality of some bodyshop work is appalling (despite their warranty, BMW-approval, and ISO certifications), and you'll end up going back & forth for a year between the insurance company and the bodyshop for them to rectify mistakes, and then spending a far amount of cash doing the little bits you find they've missed later on after they've washed their hands of it :headbang:

Also, don't let them fob you off with a cheap hire car....they have to give you a convertible equivalent until the claim has been fully settled....and paid for by the guy who hit you insurance!

Yes I thought of that too, and they've already mentioned that they'd provide an equivalent. The problem is that when I bought the car, I transferred my existing policy (ending this weekend) from my E36 over to the Z4 and the excess went up to £850. It's currently a non-fault claim so that'll be wavered, but it's a multi-car pile up so I'm nervous that it's going to get complicated and take time to resolve.

I'm very impressed with how rigid the structure is. The roof was down so you can imagine how loud the crash was from where I was sitting! Considering overall damage being as bad as it was, the cabin was absolutely fine and no glass smashed, despite bad damage to the drivers door etc. She held up very well.

Because I was shunted into the car in front twice rather than crashing into it, the bumper damage to the front looked mostly superficial to me. Everything structurally behind it looked fine. It's the side / rear damage that finished the car off. The van that hit me looked to be travelling at some considerable speed from behind so you can imagine what I was shouting as I saw it coming in the rear view!

As it's not your fault, and not your insurance that will be paying, then go for whatever 'courtesy' car you're happy with...unless you've got access to another car in the meantime, in which case they may think a courtesy/hire car is an additional, unnecessary cost.

But as to 'equivalent', in what way are we basing this - our interpretation or the insurer's? Is it based purely on price, performance, looks, body style, or a combination? Ideally they give you another Z4MR - but as they're not made anymore, the closest you'll get is a G29 Z40i, or a Boxster S :P

But:
  • A brand new Focus could be 'equivalent' in their eyes if they're purely going on price?
  • An MX5 could be 'equivalent' in their eyes on body style?
  • A Golf R could be 'equivalent' on performance?

Very sad about the loss of your beautiful car...thank be to God you are fine and unhurt!
I am sure you will find another: there are still a good few nice Z4MR roadsters around. Yes, good luck with the insurance and keep us posted!

This is so so sad! :(

If the insurance company writes the car off you should buy it back at the scrap value usually that’s around £200-£500. There loads of parts on that car worth more then that!!!!!

I myself would be interested in the lights and bonnet!

Somehow I think it will be a tad more than £500 to buy back but I like your optimism

the seats alone would be more than that

Ouch! That's absolutely gutting! At least you're okay though, and live to enjoy another Z4M if you choose to do so!
