The return of the Pocket GT

The coupe was purchased February 2020. With 2 previous owners, Ruby Black, FSH and a decent MOT history. It was nearly the spec I wanted. For 3 years lots of work was carried out such as body, engine and preventative works.

Fast forward to Feb 2023. Accident happens, the car to my right drives into my drivers rear quarter and pushes me sideways along the road.
Insurance company contacted and off it went to be inspected by the engineers. The damage was minimal, scratches to the drivers door and rear quarter panel. Paint chipping on the wheel and the rear alignment knocked out.

The engineers deemed the car a total loss! Estimating £6200 worth of repairs required and a scrap value of £1687. I recieved the Glass report and they were citing hidden repairs due to the age of the vehicle. Such as bushings etc. This was 6 weeks after they had the car.

I requested to buy back the car to repair myself. The fleet management company claimed I had said I did not want to buy back and agreed the car was sent to salvage. I still have not had the voice recording despite requesting it. I have never said it and was clear in saying i wanted to buy back. Subject access request submitted.

25th March 2023, seven weeks since the accident a notification goes off. New z4 coupe listed on ebay, £4k. It was my car! I was fuming! I had contested the payout and challenged the fleet management about the buy back and had submitted a formal complaint about the whole process. I was assured the car would be in storage until an outcome was made. So how could it be for sale. I called the company, they didn't have an answer and said it would have to wait until Monday.

Only one thing to do, buy it back. My friend brought the car and had it delivered the following Wednesday.
How could this be? It wasn't for sale.
Wednesday morning he had it delivered and Wednesday afternoon I'm being told its in storage in Birmingham. Not sure how it could be in two places at once.

With the help of the guys from the original Basingstoke Z Sh ed - Joycey. The car was up on a ramp to assess the damage, nothing found other than alignment issues. We started to take bits off that needed new bushes and next thjng we knew, the subframe was out and we did a full rear axle rebuild. These were the parts replaced;

new sub frame, diff, and contol arm bushings
bolts
Lock nuts
powder coating
dust shields
bearings
trailing arms
lower wish bone control arms
braided brake hoses
New brake lines
Wheel refurb
exhaust mounts
Drive shaft mount
Drive shaft bearings
Drive shaft carrier bearing
Drive shaft coupler
Gearbox mounts
Front brake dust shields (to be fitted)
Front bearings (to be fitted)
Front Braided hoses (to be fitted)
Top mount reinforcement plates
Water pump (to be fitted)
Thermostate (to be fitted)
Vanos solenoids
Vanos filters
Engine mounts (to be fitted)
Suspension upgrade
Hood rubbers
Bodywork including paint
Wheel alignment
KN air filter
BC BR coilovers

Not all of these bits needed doing, I had them and we went for it. A total of 160 hours of labour have been put in by the team and we was able to get the coupe back on the road, driving and looking like new.

So happy and can't wait to get back enjoying driving and attending shows.

I'm so glad you were able to resurrect the The Pocket GT.

Insurers just don't seem interested in getting cars repaired anymore. :(

Cars over 10 years old are now deemed a write off by management companies.... I reckon its a government directive to write off as many as possible to force the hand in buying electric.

Great news - and it looks as good as always!

I remember reading your post from the time of the collision, as was hoping this was salvageable - I'd be fuming with the fleet mgmt & insurance companies though. You don't need to go into detail, but do you expect to have any recourse against them?

Call me cynical but you may be right. :(

But if my car was damaged beyond repair I'd still buy another old BMW with a proper engine!

mate,, nice rebuild, but to be honest, iam more interested in the turn of events with your insurance company.. who was the seller of the (your) scrapped Z4? was it one of the guys who works at your insurance company?? id be fucking furious... obviously a complete scam.. i wonder how often they do that? probably a lot..

seriously, make sure you update us with what happens with that..

Firstly it’s great to see it back on the road, great job on the extensive refurb too!

Secondly I’d echo the above; what in God’s name are they thinking?! Not only do they sell send your car off to be salvaged despite your explicite wishes, they also have the cheek to put it up for sale!?

The only proper recourse in my mind would be for them to buy it back from your mate, get it back to you and compensate for the damages your friend has suffered (ie: the cost of the rebuild on a car he’s not going to be able to enjoy as well as all the hassle he’s been through acquiring a car that shouldn’t have been up for sale in the first place). And that’s just on his side… I’d go to town :x

Ridiculous insurance debacle and anyone would be fuming about it going up for sale vs your policy holder wishes. As Barty says, I'd really throw the book at them with this one.

Surely going to be one of the most sorted CatS coupes out there now. Congratulations on persevering and getting her back on the road

[ref]ThePocketGT[/ref], now that we're almost a month in, any updates from the insurers? Surely they can't just leave you hanging like that?
