The new Z4 is here...

I may be upgrading. I will probably try to wait until I get to Lakenheath and can find a BMW Military sales place so I can get it cheaper.

130 mph top speed, and 150 for the twin turbo, wtf mates? Really wish they had a non-compromise version with the soft top, that things really tipping the scales now. I do like the looks of the body in the newer pics and vids and inside it looks really nice! So glad for the tt, and the M version with the V8 should be a hooligan!

And you need to drive faster than 150 mph regularly? There won't be a V8 M version. The V8 does not fit in the engine bay. :(

They've done it again!

Just when you think BMW couldn't the designers have done it again. I'm amazed at every new BMW that comes out over the past few years.

Killed another car.

The ride height looks as if it'll soon be competition for the smaller off roaders!

1 Series just the ugliest car in the world
1 Series Coupe can't buy them for love nor money!
3 Series now as huge as the old 5 Series and just plain ugly
5 Series just ugly
X5 I've never seen the point
X6 looks like it was designed by a child
6 Series is passable
7 Series, again I don't see the point.

Z4 - The only truly stunning looking roadster available from BMW and they've done this to it.

The designers should all be shaking in their shoes with the worldwide financial meltdown due to the yank banks. Can you imagine going for another job and saying, "I designed the 1 series"!

They can keep it.

With the sales from this car it's going to make the current Z4 from 2003 until end of production even more desirable to buy second hand.

The New BMW Z4
An Expression of Joy?

Probably for Mercedes, Audi, Porsche etc etc!

Here's the link for the UK site.

Harsh words my friend. :) Can't say that I agree with you on everything. Let's see:

The ride height looks as if it'll soon be competition for the smaller off roaders!

1 Series just the ugliest car in the world. Worse than Pontiac Aztec? :o It certainly is top 3 within BMW (with X3 and X6).
3 Series now as huge as the old 5 Series and just plain ugly. I strongly disagree. Stop living in the past.
5 Series just ugly. :|
X5 I've never seen the point. Where are you living? We need to have a face-to-face conversation. :P The X5 is an awesome vehicle.
X6 looks like it was designed by a child. I agree.
6 Series is passable. 6/M6 is
7 Series, again I don't see the point. :o

How did you figure? The V8 certainly fits into the E85 Z4's engine bay.

Not quite impressed with the new z4

the overall land shark profile is lost. new one isn't just as aggressive (at least in the official pics)

rear end looks too much like the 6er which i do not like

front looks like a 3 series combined with something else.

interior looks more comfy though.

this wasn't how my first impressions were with the first gen z4.

anyway seeing the car in person always get the final verdict for me, so i'll have to wait and see

OK... so I'm liking it a lot more now that the official pictures are out. But in all honesty, I still don't like the lines on the car with the hood up compared to the E86 Coupé. Obviously there's some bias in that statement, but I'm sure others will agree.

Front end looks nice and aggressive. But it reminds me too much of a 3er, a car I never would want. Back end is OK, but would look better without the HORRIBLE placement of the 3rd brake light. Side profile is pretty plain (I dunno why they chose to break up the line going from the front to the back).

As a whole I think the designers did a good job. But the whole is a sum of parts from the rest of the lineup. There is no true originality in this iteration, and as such I'm sad.

To top it off, this car weighs just short of a 5er and has no proper e-brake. :o This car would make a great boulevard cruiser... definitely steps on MB territory.

I'm glad I have a proper car. 8)

On the interior. passanger door has a 'Z4 shaped' Door pull, to use to close the door whilst the drivers side has a finger grab, to hold to close the door. (Easy access to the windows and mirror buttons?

First thing my girlfriend said was that it looks (from the front) like a 3 series.

I do like it, but when I look a a picture of the present Coupe, I like mine more!

It does look like a small 6 series and I agree, it hasn't any stand out features now. Just looks like a "normal" sports car. It does have "Made for the USA" stamped all over it in the overall styling also IMO.

I'll keep mine for a bit longer yet (if I don't get the new Nissan 370Z or RS Focus!!).

May have a look in 2011 when I see how good that roof is. I know a BMW M mechanic who said at the weekend he hopes that folding roof is better than the one on the new 3 series!!! That's the one thing I am not sure about myself. I like hard top cars as there is too much faffing about with any kind of folding top!! And that boot space looks worse than the present M version!! :o

If I didn't have a Z4 I would probably look at one, but the lack of a Coupe version may have put me off. Not bad pricing though! Would never buy a new car again these days, so give it couple of years there may be some good priced cars about.

Bad timing to launch a new roadster though!! :?

First impressions, not good.

The video does it some favours to be honest, as it does look better than photos. But the rear just looks wrong. The front looks ok/nice, but not certain either.

Will probably be like all other beemers for me, dislike for a while then really love it. I hated the Z4 when I first saw it, but when I saw it in the flesh I loved it. So will see.

But I'm a deffo no for now.

The photoshop images show that bigger wheels will set it of better. But as we can all plainly see this is an SLK competitor. Quite a different car for a different market.
I like aspects of it, but as i have said before im just not old enough, or rich-wife enough to own one. It hardly says fun roadster/ocassional track car does it.
The lines on the bonnet/hood also look a bit too Chrysler Crossfire as well. Not simple enough in a lot of respects.

I think you have hit the nail on the head there.

 I still like it alot, although it's starting to tip the scales and doesn't look so nimble. :(

Watching some of the videos the cabin looks a lot more polished than the current version, much more luxurious. Add in the hard top, weight and size gain, and those large engines and seems to me this is pitched as a alternitive to a Merc SL.

I like it, not enough to buy one just yet but enough to come back to it once they have been out for a year of so.

What does it weigh?

Current car is not exactly light

Weight was in one of the links in this thread, certainly more than the current.

What are our guesses, 225kg more than a 3.0Si for that model?
1385kg to 1470kg for the 3.0

sDrive30i manual 1470kg
sDrive30i auto 1500kg
sDrive35i manual 1565kg
sDrive35i DCT 1585kg

There might be a bit of difference between US methods of measurement so I'm not 100% certain on these. The EU weight of the "old" 3.0Si was 1415kg so comparably the sDrive35i DCT will be over 1600kg with tank of fuel etc.

The SLK350 is 1505 and the SLK55 is 1575kg so I suppose it is broadly comparable with its peers.
