Sadly, I will have to change my driving ways. There's an increased police presence (yes, we live in a police state) in my county. I was stopped for speeding. I've had my car for 13 months and never stopped before, but apparently, my county needs more $ revenue $ coming in...

I stopped at a long line (must have been a line of cars stretching a half mile and changed to the left lane, which was virtually empty). So when I changed lanes, I accelerated. I was stopped for allegedly doing 51mph in a 30mph (3 lane) road. I never checked my speedometer, so I will never know how fast I was going, but I was driving up to a red light, which was more than 1000 feet away. I stepped on the gas because I was going too slow... next thing I know, a cop with blaring sirens appeared out of nowhere. Whenever I step on the gas in the Z, the car gives a strong jolt forward and the engine purrs loudly.

"Officer, what did I do wrong?"

"You were going 51mph on a 30mph zone."

"Well, I never checked so I don't know. But I wasn't endangering anyone."

"We're doing speed detail here."

"Officer, I was driving. I wasn't breaking any laws"

He gave my car a once-look-over and said:

"You were probably jacked up..." [implying I was speeding because I have this car] "...just plead 'Not Guilty' and we'll keep from knocking points off."

The truth was, I wasn't jacked up. I was on my way to the golf range to hit a few.

"So Officer, you're telling me to plead 'Not Guilty', but you're giving me a ticket anyway??? Why?"

He walked back to his car. I looked over my shoulder and saw three other cars being pulled over by three separate cop cruisers.

I know what some of you will say...
"You got caught, pay the consequences."
"That's what you get for speeding."
"Stop breaking the law."

I took a drive early this morning to listen to the car. Usually, I played music and never paid much attention. But each time you press on the accelerator, the car gives off a loud purr when you go from 0 - 20mph - so it gives the appearance (or the sound) that you're going fast or you're really hitting the gas. I went onto the same road I was stopped at and went 30mph... not much difference in the way I was driving when I was stopped. Then I went 50mph about 10 seconds later. No drastic difference other than the number on your speedometer.

I know I'm splitting hairs... but that's exactly what the cop did.

Moral of the story? Drive like a blind grandmother -
Open up a vein and let every drop of your joy for driving spill out. :x

BlueMoon, don't be distressed. You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time as were plenty of others. Although 51 in a 30 is a bit much, don't change your driving habits until you have more reason to do so. As the end of month comes, it's typical that residential cops scramble to make their monthly ticket quota. Bottom line is you'll enjoy the Z4 less with sky high insurance premiums. Prime objective is to have fun but also, continue to be smart and careful about it. ...dean

Thanks Dean... I need to calm down about it but still can't. In any case, I hired a lawyer to handle the whole thing ($500) because I know I'll create a riot at the courthouse. The lawyer told me that the difference between 50mph and 51mph (which the cop wrote down on the ticket) is a matter of 1 point - thanks to the guys in blue. :x

But I'll never know if I was going 51 in a 30. In any case, drive 30mph on an empty road and then accelerate to 50... it's really not that much difference. Additionally, I wasn't [allegedly] driving 51mph for any long period of time... less than 10 seconds, I reckon.

Riot in the courtroom? Ya gotta be kidding, right? Don't ever think you are unique when you go in front of a traffic court judge, you aren't. Pay the $ and pay more attention to what you are doing in the Z4. Remember, to become a judge, one has to be a lawyer....do the math.

Just out of interest, what sort of insurance premiums are you guys looking at in the states for your cars.prices over here just keep going up and up.i'm 21 years old and have just got a new z4 sport.its only a 2.0 though and i pay £3000 this year.think that's around $5000 or so.I was caught on speed camera doing 62mph in a 40 zone.stupid i know and now im payin out my arse for it.probably twice what it would have been.I would love to come and live in the states, everything is alot fairer.here you work your ass off an the government just loves to put their hand in your pocket

Whoa ho! Look at you!!! If this were Jerry Springer, this would be the time I make a molding of a chair on your forehead. For your info, I did the math @sshole. If I go to court, make a scene, I've got more to pay for than the $500 I'm paying the lawyer. Trust me, duckb!tch, I have a temper when I'm rubbed the wrong way.

I pay $364 on a six month policy. While everything costs more in England, you may get a reduction in a few years (if your driving record is clean)... since you said you're only 21y.o., they slap on a premium. I'm shocked that the Gekko isn't giving you a deal... he's English!

I'm going to give you an opportunity to apologize to this forum.

+1.

If you're going to speed 20mph over the limit, don't bitch when you get caught. Your posts certainly demonstrate what a "mature" person you are while at it. Think the cop would've cut you a break (maybe a 49mph in a 30mph instead?) if you acted rational and didn't argue with him?

I just posted something and it was censored. Nice.

Ducky, care to tell me what the charge is? Let me say this before I leave and rid myself of you... when someone posts a rant on Z4 Forum about... I don't know... DRIVING, and you post a rather insipid and hostile reply from your wheelchair with two colonoskopy bags wrapped around your neck, you rub people the wrong way. And now you're giving me an opportunity to apologize???

Be a man. You don't own this forum. And don't try to get others on your side by having me "apologize to this forum." Last time I checked, you were the one who spewed first. Take responsibility for it.

Please don't use the "maturity" card... it's immature that you use it. And if you read my post, you would've read that I didn't have an argument with the cop, he just walked away when I asked him why he ticketed me if he's already telling me to plead "Not Guilty" on the ticket.

No answer. No reply from him. I just assumed that when he gave me the speeding ticket, THAT was the charge and so he didn't have to give me another answer.

I've got no beef with you. In fact, I had no beef with Ducky until he tried to "set me straight".
