the new cayman/boxster GT4

that's as rare as the Z4M here  any numbers on the cayman?

I made love to my mrs thinking of this

All of this exclusive nonsense is starting to arse me off a bit. It's a £60k Porsche not a McLaren or Ferrari.

Why bring a model out that nobody can actually buy? Their whole marketing policy is starting to turn me against the brand. I get the production in limited numbers bit but there are limited numbers and then there are ridiculously limited numbers and this and the GT4 fall into the latter. If they'd made 500 of each available in the uk for example, it wouldn't exactly have caused values to plummet now would it?

I'm not going to any dealer and grovelling to them to sell me a car FFS.

Yes, it's a big shame they didnt make more, i'm sure they probably will eventually, maybe the next gen. Id of considered the GT4 in that case, but as you say - i'm not going to COMPETE to own a car and beg a dealer.

totally agree its getting fucking stupid.

this car and the GT4 was never going to be obtainable for the average enthusiast. even if i could stump up 70 k for a Spyder i don't think id fit the Porsche criteria to actually get one. Due to the super limited number like insanely limited numbers these cars are going to skyrocket.

If they did build unlimited GT4 numbers I wonder what impact it would have on the GTS given all of them on Autotrader at the moment are north of £65k.

I think GTS prices are high because they've stopped making them whilst they made the GT4 but production resumes shortly. There were some really long delivery dates quoted for people on PH - like ordered in Feb delivered in November type stuff.

Yeah its pissing me off to. Basically they will all get purchased by people with 918s etc and then stored as collectors items and never get driven.

You have to give it to Porsche though. The 996/997 (exc Turbo/GT cars) all had shite built unreliable engines (And Cayman/Boxter) that basically melted, yet all the owners still love them and stay faithful to the brand. They still seem to hold their value well.

I used to want a Porsche, but im rapidly going off them to be honest.

I want this Porsche. Sure it's £30K more, but it's easily worth that

The Spyder seems to be getting bit of a bashing , also seems like Porsche have pushed a-lot of unfulfilled allocations from the gt4 into the Spyder. It also seems all the decent bits of the spyder will soon be available on the GTS models which would REALLy piss me off if i was a new spyder owner., I'm reading stuff like below all the time, the GT4 is the one to go for if you get chance basically.

Spyders most critically do not have the GT4 suspension/subframes (which are GT3/911 Cup up front, GT3-derived out back), nor GT3 brakes (Spyders have Carrera S brakes). Spyders are simply an evolution of the "Sport Chassis"/X73 Sport Suspension available as an option on all Boxsters and Caymans. Aero is different as well, so it should produce less downforce at speed. Also different wheels and normal tires on the Spyder, instead of Pilot Sport Cup 2s.

I'm not saying it's not an innacurate stereotype, i'm just saying it's what i (and what ~most people, petrolheads or not) think too. I get it, it's a dangerous comment on a Z4 forum - though the Z4 is more aggressive than boxters/SLKs.

I guess these days (at high end boxter prices..) it's less hairdresser and more salon-owner. Clearly the car ISN'T a hairdressers car, it just looks like one :) :fuelfire:

There's no original thinking to be had, it's a body style with a bad rep, albeit probably one of the best, if not the best, balanced drivers car you can buy - but this has no impact on it's image outside of the small-roadster-fanclub though.

haha, I like that - salon owners!!

85 coming into the UK - People who bought the 987 version must be doing cartwheels as there was always a bit of a concern that the 981 version would impact on values

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/porsche/boxster-987-05-12/porsche-boxster-987-gen-ii-spyder-pdk----------------2011/3787377

you'd be happy if you bought a 987 they've hardly lost any value in 4 years . thought long and hard about one of these last year before buying something different.

not sure it would bother me that its not as track honed as the GT4 - it is basically a GTS which is a lovely car anyway .

Slightly off topic but I've been considering both the Cayman and Boxster and hoping to get to test drive one of each in the next week or so. Using the configurator has been a frustrating process as the pricing of each model puts with a few options added puts it in the price range of the next model up. THis has led me to try to reconsider some of the options I wanted to try to bring the next one up into my price range for what I want to pay. For example I've managed to get a 2.7 with premium paint, all the good chassis options including PDK to £52,250(still with 18" wheels only and without Xenons or sat nav) when the GTS Cayman starts at £55k for the manual and base paint and already includes some of the items I wanted. I can understand why some people are of the opinion that you're better going for a low spec base Cayman or a GTS. I'm not sure why anyone would buy an S model now because the difference between it and the GTS is so minimal you might as well get the GTS which will likely hold it's value better. As I would run one daily and not so bothered about straight line performance I would prefer a 2.7 with 18's but pricing gets too close to the S with a few options. Think the GTS with the options I would want comes to only about £10k more than my 2.7 spec

Not even looked at the GT4 but think the base GT4 would be only about £3k more than the GTS with the options I would want.
One thing that has surprised me is that even the GTS doesn't come with an LSD (the Porsche PTV option) as standard and the base model doesn't have Xenons which in this day is rubbish. Maybe times have changed and LSD's aren't so necessary these days otherwise I would have thought it would have at least been part of the GTS package.

There's a good article on the base Cayman in Evo this month Darren. Highly rated indeed. The only slight niggle being the long gearing but that's commom to all Caymans.

Cheers, I'll have to try to get hold of that. I read somewhere that with the PDK, 7th gear is good for something like 430kph and 6th is way beyond that of the potential top speed of the car too I think but helps MPG

Here's an example £52k base Cayman spec. The premium paint, pdk and sports exhaust do the worse damage, oh, and the couple of carbon interior parts(not really necessary):

Exterior Colour 0L Carmine Red £ 1,595.00
Interior Colour AZ Black leather interior £ 2,174.00
Exterior 498 Deletion of model designation £ 0.00
635 ParkAssist (rear) £ 348.00
DBR Exterior package painted Exclusive £ 851.00
Transmission / Chassis 220 Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) incl.
mechanically locking rear differential
£ 890.00
250 Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) £ 1,922.00
475 Porsche Active Suspension Management
(PASM)
£ 971.00
XLF Sports exhaust system Exclusive £ 1,530.00
Wheels 396 18-inch Cayman wheels £ 0.00
Interior P04 Sports seats Plus (2-way, electric) £ 312.00
P13 Automatically dimming mirrors with
integrated rain sensor
£ 332.00
Interior Leather 840 SportDesign steering wheel £ 284.00
Interior Carbon EEJ Carbon interior package (with leather
interior/with PDK) Exclusive
£ 1,008.00
XHM Centre console trim in carbon Exclusive £ 341.00

For me to consider it, assuming test drives are okay, I'd want a decent discount on that as would definatley want Xenons too

Chris Harris always said 2.7 was better than 3.4.

But why aren't you buying pre owned?

I would always get

Xenons
Full leather
PDK
20 '' wheels
Twin Pipes

And all for £45ish

1. Never had a new car before and wouldn't mind doing for something a bit special (rather than a 3 series or something).
2. Considering not able to get the spec you want pre-owned, the prices being commanded are not low enough for me to think it's worth compromising on spec. I'm used to seeing BMW's dropping nearly £10k or so in 12 months or less - these don't seem to do that :)
3. For me it will also be a long term ownership experience too - I'm thinking 10+ years so initial outlay of buying new not so bad and more justifiable.
Some of the 20" wheels are very nice but some shite IMO, but on the 2.7 I think it's a bit overkill to run them and especially on a daily driver which mine will be. 20" will surely weigh more than 18"'s increasing unsprung weight, 20" will give less feedback on track when driving closer to the limit (when they#'re about to let go), not that I really intend to track it if I buy (initially anyway)
