The May Photo Competition - COMMENTS

Well, using the moonlight only would've been extremely difficult. There was moonlight during my shots but not enough to make good photos. Even with the added streetlight we had to use a pretty extreme exposure time (25 or 30s for this one iirc, and a tripod of course).

If the theme had been "sunset" I guess we'd get hundreds of entries 8) Maybe for next month?

Amazing picture Cthugha!

Was hoping to get some moon shots on Skye had the tripod ready but it disappeared behind cloud and never showed itself.

I think I might go and take a few pics in the moon, any of the pros got any tips? I don't have a tripod.

If no tripod, would suggest following (or even if tripod..)
find any stable surface (table, chair, wall, another car roof).
Set the aperture to as wide as possible.
Turn of the flash
Put it on timer. (if you are very fancy you could use the remote switch instead)
Press the button.
The timer will stop you moving the camera during shutter opening.

Obviously if you have a compact, there may be a limit to how much you can adjust. But still use timer etc.

I may try to get a picture up, if i can get my car before the end of the month, but it will be pushing it close

The theme definitely isn't catching on this month, is it.

I'm no expert but as long as you have a solid base to rest the camera on try either

1. apeture set at 22 with shutter speed at 2 mins

or

2. apeture set as low as it will go for 22 secs

One option leaves a halo type glow around any light source while the other leaves a star shape around any light source.
Also worth playing with shutter speeds as it really depends on light levels and in my little experience, the darker the light levels the more dramatic the colour and movement can be.
Also worth playing around with a torch whilst on a long shutter shot particularly if you have some colour media to shine it through.
Hope that helps

Technically it's sunlight from the ground but it's the best I could manage this month :)

inkey$ - Z4 on the Moon shot....... beat me to it, I was thinking of doing that

That makes 4 cars on the Moon now!

i have looked again at inkeys pic, this should be banned, he is obviously driving and somebody else as took the pic 8)

I am embarrassed to admit it, but I suggested this moon light theme. It seemed like a good idea as I like the lighting on a perfect night. I have attempted a moon lit photo twice now. The first attempt was last week and resulted in nothing but I learned how hard it is. The second attempt last night had me out from midnight till 3 AM and I never saw the moon. Perhaps this moon light theme should be an idea for a different season like September (or maybe never). The first entry this month is a great photo and I realized (to late) - we should of just made the theme - under the night lights. The entries could use whatever night lighting they desire - lights, moon or whatever. ( is it to late to change ? ) I'm not sure I'll try for a moon lit photo again - my wife already thinks I'm nuts and the police already checked me out (twice).

No problem with the theme, I just keep falling asleep at night and it's been cloudy for a few weeks now.....maybe this weekend.....

Nice effect breaker. I recognise the Zed photo, can you post an unadulterated copy of the moon photo - looks like a stunning pic

The Z photo is another pic from the same location in Cornwall of a pic I think I posted on here.. I'll post the Moon pic later. It was one of loads I took trying to get a good shot! Most are rubbish as it was just using a 200mm lens The stars are real!

I can confirm that it is me driving but I'm wearing my much underused 1984 NASA deep space suit.

sh*t, now I'm going to have to spend serious time fiddling about in the dark to get a decent moon shot. The one i entered was a "wake up at 4am, stumble around and find a tripod then drop it in the garage , set it up and fire a couple of shots. 4 am because that's when the moon is in front of my house and the clouds were just touching the right side of it....I had to crop the actual moon out as there was too much flare from it and the streetlight next to the driveway....

nice  where in the world was that taken? so little light pollution  (its somewhere in the northern hemisphere judging by the shape of the creators)

It was taken in winter, at home using an 18-200 Nikon lens so nothing special! There were some street lights around also!Didn't use a tripod but the roof of my misses MINI!! Took loads at different exposures. Had the pull the exposures on that pic in PS. The sky looked mainly blacked out until I pulled the brightness up a touch and it showed the stars! Lucky shot I guess as I haven't got a shot like it since!! Most of the other pics on that shoot were scrap!

You are go for TLI

May be best to wait until the Moon is visible in the evening, rather than after midnight. The next full Moon is at 21:14 Wednesday, 15 June. This month it was 12:09 Tuesday, 17 May. A bit late to wait up for?
