The Library an ode or is it an epitaph?

Though some of us are new here, we're not new to forums, and can behave accordingly.

Over the years I've been a regular contributer to multiple, starting with SXOC almost 20 years ago. I've landed here precisely because I prefer this sort of place than the FB groups (as useful as they can be) and I look forward to hopefully making and actual contribution at some point, even if I'll certainly take more than I give in the early stages.

No worries about that at all. I for one wouldn't contribute half as much if I didn't think people were using the info.

As a fairly recent arrival, I can relate to both sides.

It's not difficult to post on the new members thread. Manners maketh a man etc, even if you have the intention of posting that for sale advert.

Any (true) bloke should be ready for banter both ways, and people who get upset are to be viewed with suspicion in my experience.

Hopefully, the tail will be almost infinite. The Z4 is a classic. And now they aren't making them anymore, I suspect this little cars desirability will only increase.

Well I thought the post from @B21 was an interesting read outlining the lifecycle of a forum.

As for welcoming new members - some people can't seem to get their head around the fact that these first time for sale posters will never be that.

At best they are here just for the transaction, at worst they are hoping to snag a member under false pretenses by using the trusted nature of the forum as a cover.

I think how they react to responses, especially the sarcastic ones, speaks volumes about them as an individual. It also allows us to establish if they are a genuine seller even if they don't ever intend to be a member.

So well done to @enuff_zed this time for taking the lead and hopefully myself or another established member will follow in his footsteps when the next one comes along.

When all it takes to join is an email address this duty of care is a foundation of the forum we should be proud of rather than one to berate, and if a little sarcasm brings some humour to proceedings well where is the harm in that?

I also found it an interesting read. I'm quite new here and have found it helpful- but I have noticed that, in comparison with the previous forum I was on (Nissan Elgrand, different kind of vehicle!), the tone here tends towards the acerbic at times.

Ahem! I suspect I’m the only qualified “member”! 😁

You keep your member to yourself Richard, no one wants to see that surgically enhanced thing wafting around the place making a nuisance of itself…..🫵

…..can’t speak for Sars mind….who knows….🫣😬

….or Pondy….😳

I'm not a 'member'; just a bell-end. 🙃

This forum is not just a 'knowledge and info database', it's much wider than that IMO. It is also a very sociable place where many people can discuss almost anything without being overly-moderated.

The original post was just one person's 'take' on the forum. I see it as something completely different. That's because the OP and I have wildly different personalities and wants from the forum. Both are right IMO, as the forum can be whatever you want it to be.
That is what makes it interesting, popular and successful.

Too many car forums adhere too much to the 'technical questions and answers' only mandate. That is a recipe for exactly the type of through traffic this thread is discussing. It also makes it uninteresting to get involved in. IMO.

I suspect you may be correct @BMWZ4MC, though there are for sure quite a few boneheads other than @john-e89 and @Pondy on here 😘
