The June 2012 Photo Competition - COMMENTS

I'm happy with us sticking with PS or alike edited images. More so as I use my iPhone for taking pics so need some additional fine tuning to clean the image up

I guess I am not alone in this?

I just think its a bit silly. Like in the film days to get a print on paper you have to process it... I don't understand the problem really.

Tom, I don't dislike photoshop. In fact it's great,
I think one month with out it would be good. It would also show that a good photograph will not always require editing and can be achieved in camera with good light .
I also think a black and white month would be Good fun as well

It's not a suggestion to not use digital manipulation or to criticise its use, digital wizardry is, most often than not a must these days. All I was suggesting was one month for people who don't/won't/can't use software to manipulate their photos.

I use photo editing software all the time, I'm not particularly good at it but I'm most certainly not scared of it or of practising with a view to improvement.

I just thought, give the people who haven't digitally manipulated their photos a chance or the confidence to show them on the competition, just for one month, then back to business as usual.

One might put forward the theory that it's the photographers that use photoshop or the like who are reluctant to show ther photos without them being manipulated. :poke: :fuelfire: :D

It's like wanting to see Kylie Minogue naked in the flesh vs seeing an airbrushed photo.

I know which I'd prefer ;)

Of corse it can thats not the argument. Your a good photographer right? and if your shooting 5k images a week you must be a commercial photographer. When you know what your doing its a lot easier and if you are shooting that many images, yours need to be spot on or you would never be away from the machine. That is the argument how many peoples are spot on out of camera?

This isnt a pro competition it is for fun, most pros dont have time to sit and spend hours, my workflow on PS is around 10 mins because I go to the correct lengths in camera but then like you I am a photographer and make a living from it. In that respect if your looking for a perfect image then PS is not a huge concern to most pro photographers, but I think more so for amateurs wanting to have some fun. So when you want to do something more creative then it is, or if your pic out of camera isnt correct then making it a correct exposure or even touching your images to create a desired aesthetic, removing dust or objects that remove attention from the subject. So I think removing something that aids creativity or a unique aesthetic is a negative step.

But I agree a themed month would be cool.

But again if your shooting B+W out of camera they are bland, lack contrast and are very flat and need some kind of contrast adjustment. Again like a blanc canvas, I don't no any pros that would shoot B+W out of camera, also means if you even needed the colour version then you couldn't have it. So again post processing.

Here is the problem from my view point...
Like a lot of others I also shoot RAW format and that requires using PS to process. The whole point of using RAW is so you have more data in the image to produce the very best image possible. So where do you draw the line on using PS?

Also, as has been noted before when well done you can't tell if PS has been used. The last time we had a no PS contest I got a number of PM's complaining that a certain pictures appears to have been photo shopped. In most cases there is no way to tell unless it is obvious where a texture filter has been used or something like that. There is software that is very expensive that can render an opinion if the image has been altered which I don't have or want. Therefore if there is a contest where PS is not allowed we would take the individuals word for the fact that there was no photo shopping. I other words I'm not going to become a PS policeman.

If someone believes that an entry has violated the no PS rule the only recourse would be to not vote for the photo. These are some of the reasons I always return to a view point that let each individual produce the very best photos that they can and then the board will judge.

This exact same debate was had in my works photography club a couple of months ago as we're having some members drop out because there was the feeling that we were moving more towards digital imagery and loosing sight of the core concepts of photography, yawn! The result was they split the competitions into 2 categories.

I'm all for a post processing free month once a quarter say and mix in some monthly themes maybe. We could have a blonde month a brunette month and possible even topless month too :D

That sounds like a plan Socketr :D
Wedding and portrait photographer Tom , I do very little commercial work.

Can we have a month when only members that have calibrated their monitors can vote? At least that way we can be sure our ps distortions of reality are not viewed on any old piece of sh!t :violent1: :violent1: http://www.wikihow.com/Calibrate-Your-Monitor

Funny you should say that because I often wonder how true the photo's appear on other members monitors. My SpectraView is calibrated with Adobe colourspace but my Dell struggles a bit which is weird considering thats Adobe calibrated too. Must be my eyes lol :?

My laptop and PC show images different. The designers used Macs where I used to work, and the images we used for advertising looked far better on Mac than my crappy IBM think pad....

Hey, its a fun comp right? And people can vote for who they want too right?
Then it all boils down to that really. Personally I just love to see people being creative

Hell yes! This PS vs No PS is just more forum banter. Nobody's (yet) got arsy, just well placed and well thought out arguments for and against.

Just think on some forums you'd have to check under your car in the morning in case someone really took offence!

Damn, was hoping for a fight and you snuffed it out Stuart! :headbang:
Seriously, though it's all good and I really do love seeing people be artistic. This comp is consistantly providing some amazing shots (this month is a good example) and long may it continue. Reckon we should have more themes though. Usually pretty fun seeing the results (see gallery thread last year featuring shots with the moon).
