6+ hours on a plane ......................... where the air conditioning is recirculated again and again-

I think perhaps you need to do a bit of research into how it all works buddy.

Sorry buddy.....

8+ hours on a plane.

I see your humour and raise you....................
The extra 2 hours will mean even more complete changes of the cabin air.

I know I get it. But still some of the air is circulated. We can argue over percentages all day EZ and I am sure you know more than me but my understanding is there is air that's circulated on planes?

I will qualify the following by accepting that my 'hands on' career was on fast jets, but I did then spend a few years as a technical author writing manuals for the forthcoming Boeing 777X, which has furthered my theoretical understanding.

When all this kicked off there were several airlines that actually increased the circulation of their cabin conditioning systems.
Very basically, the air enters above your head and is drawn straight down through the floor. With the high seats in aircraft, this means it is not very likely that the air will flow over another passenger in a different row, then on to you. You really are only at immediate risk from the person next to you. Increasing the airflow moves it from top to bottom even more quickly.
The air drawn out of the cabin passes back through the conditioning system where it is mixed with air tapped from the engines (taken from the mid/lower pressure compressor stages, before it is burnt). Some of the cabin air escapes through systems of inward/outward vent valves which are primarily designed to regulate the cabin altitude. (This control of cabin altitude is another interesting subject in it's own right, as it affects fatigue life and therefore airline costs).
The HVAC systems have extremely fine HEPA filters which remove a great deal of the contaminants in the air on each pass.
Typically, the air entering the cabin can be 40 to 50% 'new' air from outside, via the engines.
It is estimated that the cabin air is completely renewed 3-4 times per hour, possibly more now that the systems have been accelerated a bit.
There is no concrete proof that I am aware of but it is widely believed that due to the extremely low humidity levels above 30,000ft, the feeling of having a head cold may be due to the dry air you're breathing in.

There was a lot of concern about being in a closed environment with many other people but to be honest I'd rather be in an aircraft cabin than in the pub!

Fair enough- you learn something new every day! Thank you- I assumed it was all just recirculated.

Thanks for your opinions and concerns I will be there and back before any teenagers and many youngsters have even had the chance of a vaccination even if they wanted it so I shall a) be vaccinated, b) have a vaccine passport enabling me to board and land c) only be sitting with already vaccinated people.
I shall be self isolating for the duration of the holiday with a small group of like minded people and when I do go out in public I will know that Greece has also practically vaccinated ALL of their island residents in preparation

Its actually only 3.5 hours flight time with 180 or maybe 230 pax for what its worth. Loved the arguments about flight time and how an aircraft pressurization system works - amazing how tyhese bants diverge.

As for the vaccine not being a silver bullet I thought those only worked with werewolves and vampires, I think you may have taken the Bat origin of Covid a little too seriously?

Thought I’d better get vaccinated seeing as I’m a pensioner now, Oxford version given & feeling fine so far. Will probably self medicate with Jack Daniels later just in case :P

Sounds like a great holiday Rucky.

Seems to me that tyhe EU will do anything collectively to cast aspersions on Oxford AZ due to their own failure to procure enough vaccine.
Banning the Oxford AZ - then saying we dont have enought vaccines conveniently passes the buck.

Just the other week Italy / The EU banned the export of 250K Oxford AZ vaccination to Oz - citing that it was required at home.
Now its banned

They need to take a 54it of get off the can!

I had Oxford AZ, nil effects
Wife had Oxford AZ - got a slight headach and I quote - feels like I ve had a bottle of Prosecco to myself.
Daughter had Oxford AZ - went to bed with chills and a fever and a bit achy - lasted 36 hrs.
3 x 95 yr old parents had Pfizer and Oxford AZ - Nil side effects

Do I recommend it YES ABSOLUTELY
Do I want to convice Anto Vaxxers anymore - NO I dont give a toss!
Have I booked a holiday YES! - I am off to Greece where I should have been in May last year and again on May 16th this year.
Just a deferral.
Looking forward to being on holiday with all the other vaccinated people in a country that will be totally vaccinated and only accepts vaccinated people!

Makes sense to me!

I am doing that right now. No vaccine yet though. :-)

Numbers are looking great again today.

Just think what they are going to look like when they get the second jab and it kicks in for the over 60's.

Summer 2021 is going to be a good un!

Would be interesting to find out how many were vaccinated, as they all fall in the category where they should have been. If they have, a breakdown into which vaccine they did receive.
