For the moment we have to rely on lockdown and social distancing measures which are proven to work in the UK.
You think that the joke lockdown is working?
I would hate to think of the state we were in now if we had chosen a system that didnt work :o

Yes I do, maybe not as fast as we would like but certainly in the right direction. I think the big miss this time was not getting tougher on border control sooner.

I have to assume then that you have not left your home since March because apart from pubs, schools, barbers and the odd business closed there is no such thing as lockdown.
And as for not getting tougher on border control sooner, they still arnt. They are still going to let people fly all over the world, and enter the UK, but its ok as long as they pay £1750 for a hotel quarantine.

Lockdown is probably not the best word to describe the restrictions but for most folk they are significant.

Agree the border control is far from ideal. Don't really understand why they have not got a much tighter grip on it.

The “lockdown “ went to hell in a handcart when Cummings was seen to have flouted the rules - it was made even more difficult after “eat out to help out”

The genie was never going back in the bottle!

It was the press that did for Cummings. Like the Tories or not what would anyone on here do in the same situation. The responsibility of a 4 year old child with autism (Something the press failed to mention) was brought to his family to look after. Meanwhile Cummings and wife quarantined. All the press stories were investigated by the Police, statements taken, headlines and sensationalist stories ignored. No offences. It wasn't Cummings to blame, it was the press. He could have countered their coverage but did not want to use his child's autism as an excuse.

As for tighter borders and banning flights. Most people don't realise that a lot of freight comes into our country on passenger flights not just ships. Companies pay for room in the hold, that's why our luggage allowance is so controlled. Ban passenger flights and we would soon have people complaining about shortages. It is all about balance.

What are you talking about? He drove to Barnard Castle and his excuse was he was testing his eyesight.
His Tory friends backed him 100% because they were also flouting the rules by travelling to country retreats.
Those in power dont seem to think that they should be following the rules that they have written.

In which case money should have been given to cover any losses that might have occurred by not having paying passengers.
Just use the planes for cargo.
Im sure the money given to track and trace could have been used.

Ignore the press and check the dates he started his 10 day quarantine and the date he travelled to Barnard Castle. Think you will find he was past the 10 days so he was OK to travel in line with restrictions at that time. I only know cos I know a detective who investigated it and the reasons why Durham Police took no action.

Whaaaaaat?

The press whipping up a public frenzy just to get clicks and sell advertising?

I am kidding- they have not, not done this throughout the whole pandemic.

No matter if it was legal or not, it was seen as a breech of the rules and signalled the wrong message to the masses.

I have a question for the more seniors and the juniors (just flip it round).

When you get your second Jab and have waited for the 2 weeks (or what ever it is) for the full effects to kick in. Do you at this point consider yourself free?

Would you then go and see your grandchildren, family members etc? Or will you wait for the governments say so?

Definitely won’t consider myself as free, I’ve said it in this thread before, what I will consider myself is much more protected if I was to catch it.

Re visiting family members etc I will do so when I feel it’s safe and not putting whoever I visit at risk because even though I may be protected they may not be.

I don’t see me being vaccinated as some sort of freedom pass at everyone else’s possible expense.

Say the government don't give you the go-ahead until 6 months from that point but your risks are still exactly the same Ronk?

Would you still wait for them to tell you?

I believe this 100% the 1st sentence. But the question is do you make this decision yourself or do you do it when "your told".

Also Andy, Say we were family and went for a coffee (you vax'd- me unvax'd, under 40 and in good health) would you consider yourself putting me a risk in this situation?

I will wait until the rules allow me to go out and about.
Even then I will exercise caution.

So no basically, nothing has materially changed in terms of normality being restored

No - nothing

I do think it seems to be be improving in general if the official graphs are to be believed.
We will have to wait until a huge lump of the population gets jabbed and numbers look right to the statistics bods.

BTW,

I am not trying to set anyone up to take shots at people. I am just wondering when and how this all ends and my opinions and that of my mates differ alot from the generations above us.

My answer (rightly or wrongly) is that as soon as my Parent's or Grandparents are comfortable and safe I will be there to spend family time with them. (*edit- this also assumes that everyone in the at risk groups have also been done at that point).

How I feel right now is I am not going to watch the government eek out these restrictions to the end of the year and beyond. Life is about taking calculated risks and if us as a unit are happy with it then who is some toff (who doesn't have my best interests at heart) in London dictate how we should behave.
