The dreaded 108s and runflats

Dav the wheel nut

Veteran

Have had a very slow puncture on the front offside for sometime so decided today to have it looked at by local tyre dealer before a trip to Gaydon on Sunday.
The fitter suggested it would be leaking on the rim if it was that slow and he was right.
The 108s are so badly peeling and corroded on the inside he had to brush it down with a wire brush but said it was unlikely it would seal permanately.
Not bad for six years and thirty thousand miles
I asked him how easy it was to repair a runflat with a puncture and he said catagorically he will not repair any runflat with a puncture irrespective of its age and mileage even though BMW say they can be repaired.
Going to start actively looking for a change of wheels and tyres after that encounter.

these 108's, don't think i would fit them if i got them for free, they sound too much trouble

I've just bought my Z and it has a brand new set of 108's fitted under warranty due to corrosion which I find astounding because the car's only done 17k of mostly dry miles with no winter use. :o With the car being only 3.5 years old (and now out of warranty) will the wheels be covered by any sort of manufacturer warranty from the time of fitment or am I now on my own with them? :?

Any tips on looking after them? I'm guessing that road salt/winter use is a big no, no!?

Run a few searches as 108's have been covered to death. How to restore, protect, different finishes, etc.

They are the best looking wheel for the Zed by far, but come with a terrible price in terms of corrosion and maintenance.

Wheels wont be covered by any warranty now, and as you have only just bought the car I doubt you would get any goodwill claims either.

Im just selling my 107's, and there is no corrosion at all, no lacquer peel, no marks or anything! BBS wheels are excellent, but absolute rubbish when it some to corrosion etc.

Im selling some nice 19's Dave

I bought mine with 107s a couple of weeks ago, but mine are corroded behind the spokes, and in the recesses for the bolts. They're not too bad, but will definately need a refurb. The 107s are not immune - but are certainly less susceptible compared to the 108s, and with them not being split rim, I imagine a fair bit cheaper to refurb...

I couldn't find any posts earlier about corroded 107s, so I might be alone on this one! :P

x2

Can be picked up cheaply and a nice satisfying DIY job to renovate. I've done 2 (see below) got 2 more to do when I have the time.

Agree with cj/ the 108's are by far THE BEST LOOKING WHEEL FOR A Z4(E85/86).
U just need to look after them with plenty of wheel wax :)

108's rock

x2 - now in my 6th year with a set of 108s and no problems! Regular clean and wax, always dry the inner rim after a wash (the wheels......... :o ), joint between the star and main rim sealed with clear silicone.

Just sealed my new set this morning with clear silicone although I'm not planning of having the car for much longer.

108's are best, but ellips are good second choice.

I have 50k miles and through 120 degree heat and humidity rain and snow have had absolutely none of this corrosion/rust problems. That's weird.

I had mine (all 4) replaced as a good will gesture about a year ago (mine's an 05 plate). My dealer arranged for the BMW representative to have a look at them when he visited the dealer, afetr inspection he approved all 4

Got to say though following the terrible winter we had that all 4 are already starting to corrode again, so I may try and get them replaced again, just need to check when i had them replaced to see if it was less than a year ago?
