I have two cars. One is ford focus, 11 years old 117k miles. I use it for nipping to the shops, going to the tip, picking up furnature etc etc. The Z4 is strictly my second car. Got it in June. It's for trips away, long drive etc, It's done 3k miles. Including trips to North Wales, Southport, Preston (twice) and Kent multiple times. Admittedly before moving house when it was parked on the street I'd use the Zed sometimes to pop to the shops (the long way) but it's really does burn petrol. Now the zed is parked behind the focus intentionally to make it a faff to get out so I only use the focus for short journeys now. I'd still expect to put 12k on it in year one. It's off to france in december.
