That time again!

My z4 is a second car, basically for the weekend only, I've had it for just over a year and stuck 6.5k on it! I cannot see the point of having a car like this and only sticking 800miles a year on it! Sorry Tim but I think it's completely mad! Plus I love driving my car on a cold winters day! Heated seats, wooly hat and coat: result some of the best drives I have had in the car. I was out last winter, top down and -6C it was fantastic!!

Amazed how some people seem to get wound up when they see others doing low mileages and caring for their car. Mileage is immaterial to me  The enjoyment is through ownership not to brag I've done 100,000 in 12 months. I could do a 100 miles a year and enjoy the car, no different to me and not madness at all :P

Tim.

He is enjoying it guys......thats the key point, he enjoys having the motor in his garage, he enjoys treating it!

That's lot different than someone who buys a car and is scared to put miles on because of depreciation or it breaking - see Ferrari and TVR owners....

You go Tim!

I have never done any kind of PCP/Lease deal but won,t the low miles make the car more valuable to BMW therefore want a higher figure from you to buy ? :?

...and if there's a guaranteed future value involved, mileage is irrelevant ?

i dont blame you for putting it away during the winter as you have decided to keep it when your pcp ends

im giving mine back at the end of my pcp contract and as such since im paying £400 a month for it, im going to use it come wind, rain or sun.... its my only car however if i was going to keep it and i had the space, then i would have a second car for those horrible days too

Are you handing it back and walking away? This is the only thing that baulks with me on a PCP as just handing back you have nothing to show for it. Wouldn't a lease have been better? I just didn't fancy handing something back after paying a deposit and monthly payments not to have something to show for it at the end of the agreement

Tim.

yep, im handing it back. my deposit was only about £500 and over the 3 years i would have paid about 15k.... so 5k a year to rent a brand new car. you get what you pay for at the end of the day. my final payment will be 15k if i decide to keep it but i think when that comes around, i should be able to pick up a 35i or maybe a 35is for 15k by then.... or even go for a 335i coupe if im feeling tight lol

Sorry tim, having re-read my post it seems like an attack on you and that wasn't my intention at all, my apologies! I am thrilled you enjoy your car, I just love driving mine, and couldn't bare it sitting in the garage for 5 months! I don't know how you do it!!

Once again apologies for making it sound like an attack!

Don't you fill the tank before you put it away?

Oh and mine goes away over winter as well - I use more suitable cars in the winter !

it's great that we are so different, but the forum brings like minded soles together, we all have a passion for our zeds (well a few like myself excluded who are here for the entertainment factor) and as such we all enjoy our cars no matter how little or how much we use them.

The only point I would disagree with, is that with the addition of a set of winter wheels, the e89 is a pretty fine all season car, especially on those bright but cold January/February days when you don't have to wait for the fabric roof to defrost to get your open top motoring fix.

Tim.

Couldn't agree more Tim. I got attacked on the low mileage poll, for daring to discuss the obviously abhorrent act of not driving my car 15-20k miles per year :o

Here is my justification.

Although define "use it". I use my Z whenever I can/ want to.

I decided to get it as a weekend toy. My commute is along A-roads, which whilst it sounds nice I spend 80%+ of the time stuck behind lorries/ tractors/ numpties driving at 40mph, I have driven the ///M to work a few times, but it has always been a frustrating drive as I am merely getting from A to B and not enjoying it. (the mere fact of not commuting in my car means I remove 9000m per annum).

This means I drive my car to enjoy it and when I do drive I have nothing but a smile on my face. I get just as much fun out of my ///M driving 4k per year in it, always having fun as I would driving 13k per year in it (getting nothing out of the commute).

In my opinion, I'm not "paying for someone else to enjoy it", but "maximising enjoyment and minimising depreciation".

I could easily commute in my Z, and put an extra 10k on the odometer annually. Would I get more enjoyment out of Z ownership....NO.

People need to stop getting so frustrated at those who decide not to drive our Z's everyday. I can guarantee that we enjoy our cars just as much as you do. :driving:

Actually if I could get a relationship along the lines of a pcp I'd be ecstatic...imagine walking away only losing your deposit and running costs after 4 years instead of your best car/bike, half your pension and house and most of your savings on solicitors fees

I've had two zeds ( early E85 's ) one 2003 3.0i and current 2004 3.0SE. The former had 28500 when I bought it and after 18 months of ownership 30000 when I sold it - my current one had 28400 when I picked it up and now 8 months later it's on 28730.

TBH I do feel a bit embarrassed about not using it much but I still get a good feeling knowing that I own something different and it looks like new with everything totally original - sad but there it is.

Previous to the zeds I had a 1991 Lotus Elan with only 58k - covered only 800 miles in the 3 years I owned it

I could afford a new one if I wanted but the thought of losing so much in depreciation and not using it is all too much . All my toys have cost around £8k so depreciation is fairly negligible.

As has been said we're all different.

All fair points, which is why I have tried not to have a go - Though I do reckon Tim's Z needs taken on a holiday to treat it :D

I'm just always surprised that even as a weekend / summer car some of these are driven so little. If I was in a position to have the Z as a weekend car then I would for sure, but I wouldn't tuck it up for 5 months of the year, I'd want to drive it... And I hope I am in that position if (when) I ever get an M, because I have put over 30k miles on mine as a daily driver in 2 years. Fortunately, Tim has the Z3 for the winter which still provides the RWD roadster top down experience - win/win I guess

I'm with Tim on this one. Mine's polished, leather seats treated and cleaned, roof seals lubricated with gummi pflege and wheels off and hubs cleaned and polished, and put away in a heated and carpeted garage with a fitted cover over it, and other than lifting the cover at the front to charge the battery I shan't see it again till next April, which some might say is silly, but the thrill come next spring of getting it out again is almost as good as getting a new car. Even during the summer months when the car is on the road, to be using an old Focus with 100 bhp as a daily driver makes the 204 bhp of the 6cyl 2.3i feel more than quick enough.

I think most of us on here could afford on older car as a daily driver, its just a matter of preference, but for me I'm prepared to rough it in my Focus for the thrill of driving what seems like a new car every time I drive the Z

If you plan on handing the car back at the end I don't think it really matters whether you use pcp or lease it...It's which works out cheaper that counts.

Having nothing to show for it at the end is very unfair comment. The fact that you pay a deposit and monthly payments is irrelevant... It is exactly the same as buying it new fully for cash and selling it after 3 years...you lose more or less the same amount that you have paid monthly over the years + the deposit, the only extra factor is the interest you paid.

After 3 years including deposit I will have spent £14800 on my zed.. If I paid 30k for it in cash and sold it in 3 years with 24k on the clock I don't think I would get more than 15ish for it so it works out the same.

Btw I don't mean to come across as ranting lol, I just think with buying new, no matter how you do it, you will end up losing the same amount (except for the interest factor).

Tim, I take it you won't be going to a frozen car park and doing doughnuts on the ice then?? :poke: :D

Regarding filling the tank, I don't think it really matters these days, pretty sure the tanks are made of plastic anyways, if I was storing the car for longer than a few months over winter then I might use a fuel stabiliser.
