Thanks Nico ( NOT )

Drivers touch front wing with tyres all the time and 9 times out of 10 the spoiler damaged car comes of worse.

Is that an opinion or have you something to back it up?

'Do you have something to back it up' what a numpty!

It was a strange question!? :?
I watch F1 and that was my opinion, maybe 9 out of ten is wrong statistically but I can't remember the last puncture in a race but bits of wings are always flying off after contact!

I think that if the wing makes contact with the 'tread' of the tyre, the wing comes off worse, punctures are much more likely when the wing his the sidewall

Not quite, depends on the section of the sidewall - was all explained on Sky
OK - I'm sure that, by this time tomorrow, there'll be diagrams all over t'Interweb and in the papers

ZedFourM, do you have a vendetta against Lewis and the BBC?

I don't believe Nico intended to cause Lewis' retirement, but he intended to not avoid a collision, which is how he ''did it on purpose''.

Brundle explained that if you hit the very outside of the tyre sidewall (zooming in on the tyres shows some lines) then it's 90% a puncture, whereas tread or inner sidewall contact is much less risky.

Now I don't believe Nico wanted to give Lewis a puncture, but he didn't back out on purpose to prove a point. What point that was is anyones guess, but it's basically ruined any chance of the team sticking by him in future incidents.

It looks as if Toto Wolfe is telling 2 different stories.

While the BBC story does mention
"Mercedes' admission that they were a "broadly accurate" reflection of the meeting", it also says (as does the Autosport story):

"However, Wolff said Rosberg's remarks had been misinterpreted.

Wolff said: "Nico felt he needed to hold his line. He needed to make a point and for Lewis it was clearly not him who needed to be aware of Nico.

"(Rosberg) didn't give in. He thought it was for Lewis to leave him space and that Lewis didn't leave him space.

"So they agreed to disagree in a very heated discussion among ourselves, but it wasn't deliberately crashing. That is nonsense." "

I assume that Wolfe's quote is in response to the initial story.

On another racing subject, did anyone else see the touring cars today? In one of the Ginetta support races two cars had a bit of contact during the race and after the checkered flag they decided to carry it on and preceded to ram each other until one had no front end and wing and the other was off the track!!! I've never seen anything like it.....brilliant.

Not in the least - I'm actually a big Alonso fan, but I do like to try to understand the reality of the Hamilton/Rosberg story (as opposed to the frenzy that the media tries to whip up). The BBC coverage has been fine, and they let Eddie Jordan express some very strong views about the quality of management at Mercedes. I think that Zed_Steve may have done the BBC a dis-service by quoting selectively from their story (unless it was updated after he read it).

In terms of the team sticking by a driver, if anything would have stopped them it would have been Lewis's actions in deliberately disobeying team orders in Hurgary.

The reality is that Mercedes are paying Lewis €20m this year, whereas they are only paying Nico €12m. That means that they expect a greater return on their investment in Lewis (for Formula 1 is at least as much - if not more so - a business than a sport). Having Nico lead the WC probably doesn't suit their business plan.

I watched the incident a few times and noticed that yes Nico according to regs shouldn't have attempted the move as they weren't side by side. However if you look at his movements on wheel, he does actually slightly pull out in order not to make contact and thinking when he has moved back in that there is enough space between him and Lewis. Bear in mind Nico was carrying alot more speed into the corner as well.

Yes it's unfortunate and should not happen, especially between teammates and so early in the race.

Erm, no! The article, and quote is still there in black and white. Even the Autosport report effectively mentions this, and both reports also mention Toto Wolff saying Nicos comments were misinterpreted by Lewis.

At Hungary Lewis clearly stated on the radio to the team if Nico was near enough to make the overtake he would allow him through, but at no stage was he prepared to slow down to do this and adversely affect his own race.

And if Mercedes want a return on their investment in Lewis, they should give him a more reliable car! How many retirements has he suffered due to mechanical failure compared to Nico?
