Personally there is no real alternative for me than to use my car. I have a 104 mile commute everyday, add to that driving to other offices during the day for various meetings, driving to site once a week to visit a customer. I get through 3 tanks of fuel a week on average. But like I said public transpoprt is a joke and to be honest if I had the choice of getting on a train and saving £50-£80 a week in travel costs I'd still take the car. I'm lucky though as I am self employed so most of my travel costs are payed for by the tax man.
I live only 6 miles from work and it take me just over 10 minutes if I was to use the bus the trip would 28 miles long and take 1 hour and 35 minutes and cost £8.20p ($16)

I have things fairly easy, despite the 38 mile commute to work, there are "regular" trains that leave me with a five minute walk to the office and the train takes about 45 minutes. It costs £45 a week.
I choose to drive though since I have to get to the train station in the morning, 5-10 minutes, no where sensible to park without paying £9 a day which means I'd rely on a lift to and from the station. In total the journey is just under an hour but the trains are often late, overcrowded and uncomfortable.
Instead I can drive it in about 50 minutes, get door to door, free parking at work, be comfortable with nice seats and aircon, just for paying £60 a week in fuel.
Public transport is just not up to standard with modern life in the UK, I'd say my route is probably one of the most favourable for trains yet they don't offer a big enough advantage to get me out of the car.
in general, it comes down to fuel cost (im not in UK but probably my answer will resonate with the rest). If fuel is up x5 that what it is now, say 5 euros per Litre, then I will not drive very much at all. My monthly cost is low btw, about 100 euros. . It used to be around 50 though.
