Talk to me about brake discs...

I am also more than happy with OEM. The only downside that I can see them is the high levels of brake dust (added effort in keeping the alloys clean).

Don't talk to me about discs. I've jsut spent half a day replacing all the discs and pads on the X5 with EBC Ultimax and greenstuff pads and painting ht eclaipers. Look great but I'm aching.

OH - I use greenstuff on the Zed to as they perform as oem but no dust. Discs are your call if you want solid or something different. EBC, Pagid, Brembo, all good.

I've just put redstuff along with grooved discs on the front. Am happy with the performance but blimey they're noisy and the brake pedal vibrates ever so slightly under hard braking. In hindsight I'd have stuck with normal discs to avoid the drone but I love the look behind the wheel nonetheless.

but that's what you get with normal grooved discs and hard pads - well the droning anyway. They should not vibrate though

EBC Ultimax are grooved and claim to be silent but they too drone until bedded in.

If you want silence it has to be plain or quality drilled with chamfered holes (to reduce cracking)

CJ, I though Greenstuff was for little cars below 200hp?

I've never done the brakes on any of my cars before, is there anything I should know? Any special tools required?

This is actually for my 330ci, but i believe it's the same underneath.

With regard to the 200hp figure I frankly think that's wrong and checked with EBC who say the green is the closest to replacement for OEM. I've run these on the Zed (with larder "46 330 brakes for a year now and they are perfect. I've also worn a set out on my X5 including towing a near 2 tonne Jeep over Alps and Pyrenees a few times. Just replaced those yesterday (and stil aching from it ...lol)

Trouble with other grades is they do not work as well in cold driving and often squeel. Much better if you experience fade or make trips to the track.

Tools - as said above torque wrench
You'll also need axle stands for safety
Caliper wind back tool or big G clamp
Hex drive to get the caliper pins out and the disc retaining bolt
Breaker bar to undo the carrier bolts and decent soclet set
pliers to remove and refit the wear indicator
torch and ingenuity to loosen and readjust the rear handbrake through a bolt hole - real PITA

Aside that it easy if time consuming job

Silly question, but when ordering discs and pads on BM Mini Parts...do I need to order 2 of each?

Discs should always come in pairs and if you're looking at these - http://www.bmminiparts.com/PartDetails.aspx?InventoryId=6727FCEB-FFD9-48A7-8878-CFCA24803EB0 then that is the case. Pads will normally come as an axle set i.e four pads for two discs. Remember to order new wear sensors as you'll struggle to salvage the existing ones, one sensor per axle.

They don't always come in pairs (although they should be replaced in pairs) - even from BMW or BM Mini Parts - for example the discs for a Z4M.

Agreed, each supplier must be checked individually as to what they are selling. As you say, they should always be changed in pairs.

mmm is so right that they are no always in pairs - there are many suppliers out there who let's just say leave it a bit open as to how they are supplied. They tend to be the most expensive and priced so you think they look cheaper.

Also beware that internet sellers often don't have stock in and take your money then order them. To get the discs for my X5 I placed 2 order and each of the suppliers cam back saying the Brembo's would be supplie in 4 to 6 weeks. Eventually went with asupplier who I called, confimed stock and had guaranteed next day.

I read about BMW Performance Front Discs may fit Z4, but not the rear ones due to different braking system. It will be nice to fit those OEM Performance Discs (front and rear) to my Zed when the existing ones need replaced.

Strangely they're smaller than Z4M discs, yet 30% more expensive.

Just a warning. This company took my money off me for Brembo discs earlier this month and then emailed me to tell me they would be delivered in around 4 weeks. A bit dodgy to say the least to do that. I had to push hard for a refund and later found there is a major problem in delivery of certain Brembo discs and eventually gave up on Brembo and went for EBC.
