Talk me out of a Merc

I've just priced up my second e89 and it's coming in at £560 per month with £3,000 deposit. :(
I can get a Mercedes 250 CDI SLK AMG for £330 per month with £1,250 deposit.
I've loved every mile in my Zed for the last three years and would have another in a heartbeat, but £230 a month saving and 50mpg the Merc is tempting me!!

For even less you could have a Nissan Micra.

You can't compare those cars so if you are just looking for value for money, I am sure there are others around. A Z4 is never about economic sense.

Please tell me you've driven the Merc? Please don't tell me you have and still want it?

It wasn't for me.. Lacklustre engine, rattly cabin, squishy chassis.. I still don't get drop tops with diesel engines.. flashy look at me cars that sound like tractors.

Anyhow, blah blah lol, if you want economy and flash, go for it, just don't expect to be thrilled, excited or even cosseted in quality.

You could just keep the Zed...?

As a person who drives a 9 year old Z.. you seriously have nothing to worry about

I have to agree, it is more about the driving experience and the design of the vehicle for me which is why I bought the Z this year.

Yes, it is expensive, but what a wonderful ride and I haven't even pressed down on the accelerator all that much yet since I've only put 1K on the car so far.

Must admit that's a big difference in monthly payments. But a diesel sports car is a hard pill to swallow. :(

I had the previous model 350slk which was quick and a pretty nice car.

The latest model isn't getting great reviews? That front doesn't do it any favours.

Yeh the diesel thing bothers me too. We've got a Q5 in the petrol coz I didn't like the diesel!!
I've got the 2.3i at the mo and would like the 2.8i next but it would probably be the 2.0i.
One of my neighbours has the SLK and it's looks nice and he rates it, but I do mainly see women driving them.
I think bite the bullet and stick with the Zed, after all it's only money isn't it
I've priced a Silver M sport (as M sport werent available when i had mine) with 326's finished in graphite, auto (had manual last time) parking sensors f&r, ipod and bluetooth connection, heated seats, service pack, and auto lights/wipers. :D
I love my Zed and i'd be unhappy in a Merc i know it :(

'Talk me out of a Merc.'

MUCH easier than talking someone into one.

The SLK is horrid. Styling looking like a Vauxhall Astra with implants.

If you buy a Micra, at least noone would think that you were older than if you were drivng a Merc. :P

convinced?

diesel sports car , isnt that an oxymoron ? , dont get me wrong it has its place my sister has a diesel freelander and its very nice

Well.. We're not big fans of the slk here but I'm surprised in the pricing.

Would have thought that if engine and spec of both cars was similar, the Merc would be the dearer of the two?

not sure how you run the car , lease purchase/hire etc but these guys http://www.nicheleasing.co.uk/Bmw/Z4_Roadster/ have been used by friends in the past ?

if it was going to be mercedes then the C Coupe would be the one http://www2.mercedes-benz.co.uk/content/unitedkingdom/mpc/mpc_unitedkingdom_website/en/home_mpc/passengercars/home/new_cars/offers/c-class/coupe.flash.html
on the road it looks much more than £300 a month ? but the roof don't come off ?? 8)

I'm sure you'd be able to get a better finance deal than you've quoted on a new E89, it pays to shop around and speak to some independent finance companies once you've decided on the spec you want.

The new SLK is okay, but I personally wouldn't be able to live with a diesel convertible, the 55 AMG would be fun though.

I've had two Mercs over the years and have been really impressed by them, except for the servicing costs which make BMW dealers look like Pound Land and my SLK 320's habit of shutting down with a mystery electrical fault.

But I think the latest SLK's styling is too try-hard classic at the front and just odd with the rear. I can't see an oil burner being any fun at all - IMHO a big part of the Zed experience is the sheer turbine-like quality of the engines, the oiler may move along OK in the torque band but there is just not pleasure in it. The E89 financing does seem steep and I'm not sure what alternatives are but if you go for Merc I've a feeling you may regret it

i am not quite sure, but isn't there something in the english language like:
a pic tells a thousand words
take a look at this :o
BMW-Z4-E89-Mercedes-SLK-R172-Seite.jpg

and concerning the topic diesel engine:
please read the post : had a 320d auto tonight
a roadster should not sound like a london taxi cab :headbang:
and it should be fun to :driving:

Actually looking at that pic, my vote goes to the Merc.

Sat in one at Mercedes Benz world recently and the interior is def a fine place to be.

I quite liked the design of the old SLK even though it's a boulevard cruiser with an oestrogen image rather than a sports car but the latest model is an awful design. Very unresolved styling and I'd be mightily peeved if I were an SLS owner and they'd stuck the same front end treatment on the SLK.
